Episode 122: Fun Tickets in Our Pockets (2010 Edition)
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 24 2010 (10:00 PM - 11:00 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Two concert roundups from the current Summerzcool winter session plus we share our ticket-buying stories. (Special appearance by Jennifer.)”
02:55 - Heckler Custom Guitars
04:13 - Encores album: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
04:59 - Jimmy in St Barth’s, according to Buffett News
05:16 - Margaritaville Café in Nashville: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
05:23 - Funny or Die.com online | Funny or Die Presents on HBO
18:53 - Jamaican Dogsled Team
19:15 - the Iditarod Trail
24:51 - if it sounds like Jimmy started early, it’s because I cut a few bars from the intro. He started the verse on time but then stopped singing.
25:13 - what a terrible crossfade. This one concert roundup is rife with awkward and uninspired transitions.
26:57 - once again, we saved the sad story for offline perusal: Save the Manatee.org says record cold is leading to record manatee deaths
27:17 - a quick look at Margaritaville.com suggests the total is ten right now, not including the recently announced locations
27:59 - DOM Coon’s photos, in our gallery: photo #1, photo #2, photo #3
38:50 - conveniently, I finally got around to updating my selists pages two days prior

Episode 121: Lions and Tigers and Bores
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 17 2010 (10:00 PM - 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“No, it’s not a podcast about Detroit sports. It’s us getting all worked up over buying our “Under the Big Top” tour tickets this Saturday. (Special appearance by Jennifer. Cameo by Joe Maj.)”
01:02 - it was Thursday, February 12. I guess Buffett News posted the rumored dates first, but Buffett World was where I saw them.
Our local papers mentioned the concert date the following day, but I wasn’t sure if they were confirming the news or just repeating the rumor.
As far as I was concerned, it wasn’t confirmed until we saw the DTE ad on Sunday, February 14.
02:17 - Listener Lisa was the person who objected on MySpace. There’s a Country Fest Music Festival in Cadott WI, June 24-27; maybe it’s to that she’s referring.
03:01 - “Farewell Tour in 2010?”, from Orange Country Register. (Did I say “Oakland”? That’s a county in Michigan.)
05:27 - Taylor Swift is playing March 26 and 27 at the Palace of Auburn Hills
10:02 - Mike and Schmoe talk about one corporate gig by The Knack in Episode 61B
10:06 - Doug Fieger, in Wikipedia
19:04 - a reference to a conversation that happened before we started recording. New dad Joe Maj was asking for advice about his child’s teething problems.
20:40 - the August 5 1995 setlist
23:20 - honestly, it was more like two hours of sleep and three hours of empty room
26:19 - watch Firefly on Blu-Ray; see Firefly in space!
26:57 - the original, uncut audio file
28:04 - the original, uncut audio file
28:29 - the space station’s “Window on the World”
28:50 - Paradise Key Teas website

Episode 120: Ten Years After
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 10 2010 (10:30 PM - 12:00 AM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Latest headlines, some Super Bowl talk, the wrap-up concert roundup for Paris, and our top 10 songs of the decade.”
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Once again the show is a little late this week, but I got caught up watching the Olympics Opening Ceremonies last night.
02:56 - Margaritaville chicken wings, announced at Buffett News
03:05 - you can catch Mike and Scott sampling the chicken wings in our 2009 tailgate video. Sadly, I was too busy videotaping to have any.
04:35 - “Interview with Jimmy after Saints become NFC champs”, at Buffett News
04:41 - Mike thinks the name Cox is worthy of invoking the double-entendre horn, but, no, that’s just childish
04:55 - “Photos & Set List from NFL Owners Private Party”, at Buffett News
05:49 - I was thinking of the scandal at Tyco and the two million dollar party CEO Dennis Kozlowski threw for his 40th birthday. MSNBC’s news story includes video.
07:35 - Buffett watching the Super Bowl, according to GAC,com
08:58 - Chesney playing show after Super Bowl, according to CJDC Country
11:16 - tech writer John Gruber was particularly critical of medleys here and here
12:25 - Tuesday, October 21 2008, in fact
16:08 - Kiss’s “Calling Dr Love” Super Bowl ad
16:07 - Mini Kiss, at minikiss.com.
18:15 - “Jimmy Buffett Fights To Protect Boozy Slogan”, via Buffett Info
19:02 - WSJ provides the lawsuit in PDF form
20:32 - “Legislator tries to switch Alabama’s state song to Jimmy Buffett tune”, from WHNT.com
21:29 - Chicago show announcement at Buffett World and at Buffett News
21:49 - I have to pick on Schmoe here, since he sent me an image of the ad yet apparently did not look at it in the process.
22:42 - ringmaster
24:11 - “Jimmy Talks about the Saints” on Radio Margaritaville, from Margaritaville.com
24:42 - there is more news story we could mention. It’s difficult to give serious matters their due when you’ve had a few drinks, so it’s probably best to mention this offline: here’s a follow-up on the story we first brought up in Episode 93: “Defendant takes stand in Steamboat Springs ‘Margaritaville’ fatal assault case”
25:24 - Listener Ed provided the following links in his News Items list: Winning Vocal Event of the Year for 5 O’clock Somewhere (2003) | Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame October 2006) | Margaritaville in Glendale (April 2008) |Landshark Stadium (2008) | Jamming at Bon Jovi’s house (Labor Day Weekend 2009)
37:00 - Live in Auburn
39:04 - I was actually thinking of Roger Guth singing “Blue Guitar” on his album Scotch, which I’m tempted to say preceded Peter Mayer’s version on Romeo’s Garage (which, in turn, preceded Buffett’s version)
49:11 - audio of Elizabeth Banks and Alec Baldwin from the “Anna Howard Shaw Day” episode of 30 Rock, which aired the night after our podcast session

Episode 119: Event Horizon
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, January 27 2010 (9:30 PM - 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Another fourcast, of the top JB events of the decade; plus a vacation report, some rants, and a roundup of the latest headlines. Special guests Patti and Hud. (Cameos by Jennifer and Lee.)”
Before we start, here are some hijinks recorded with my laptop, pre-podcast.
The silliness continued as we started brainstorming other business ventures in which Jimmy could invest. After restaurants and casinos, branching out into strip clubs seemed inevitable; and here are some of the names we came up with for such a Buffett-themed establishment:
A Pirate Looks at Forties |
With all that tomfoolery out of the way, here are the show notes:
00:09 - wow, that didn’t take long. Schmoe set off the double-entendre alarm already.
00:45 - between our cold open and this part, Scott had left the room and is now returning. He’s presumably talking to Jennifer, who was out in the main lounge.
03:16 - “Martin Introduces XL Buffett Guitar”, from Buffett News
04:43 - Hud is quoting from Role Models, the fact he also happened to be staring at bikini babes notwithstanding
04:49 - jeez, the alarm is getting a workout
05:11 - “Jimmy Asks for Your Help”, from Buffett News
05:50 - UNICEF.org | WFP.org
05:55 - Hope for Haiti Now, in iTunes

09:10 - Buffett to Attend NFC Championship Game: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
09:27 - Walking to New Orleans official site. Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention.
10:22 - somebody’s photo of that shrimp-riding guy
10:41 - “Bad Sign for Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi”, from Buffett World
10:56 - “As long as the cranes were up I was staying optimistic, cause I knew it was costing them money to rent them. Now we have to wait and see” DOM Coon wrote us, January 21. “That’s the gospel from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Fins Up!!” He also passed along a link to the story at WLOX, The Station for South Mississippi.
11:45 - Pitchfork, com’s “Twenty Great ‘Simpsons’ Music Moments”
12:12 - “Shary Bobbins”, but you already knew that, didn’t you (from the 8th season episode “Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala[Annoyed Grunt]cious”)
12:23 - “Bart to the Future”, Episode 17, Season 11. Aired March 19 2000.
14:00 - “Ticketmaster, Live Nation merger wins approval, despite opposition from lawmakers, fans”, from NJ.com
17:01 - Buffett Info.com wants you to adopt a manatee for Valentine’s Day.
19:07 - Save the Manatee Club.
19:24 - “stuffed” as in plush. I don’t want to be accused of the same animal abuse as was Schmoe.
19:27 - well, you kind of do get a photo. Here’s our manatee, Chessie.
21:28 - the iPad was unveiled the very morning of this recording
21:44 - Margaritaville Cafe Myrtle Beach | Margaritaville Cafe Las Vegas
22:36 - a reference to a story Hud told before we started recording
24:29 - a reference to our previous episode
26:17 - I confess, there was such a big gap between this last segment and the next, the only way to disguise it was to cover it up with this little Tiki Bar TV promo
26:48 - Listener Josh wrote us on January 17
28:16 - I’m being overly generous. Hud’s right.
28:48 - yep, Listener Josh e-mailed us about the Pitcher Perfect EP back on May 21 2007
30:01 - see 26:17, except now with a link to the Detroit Podcasters Network
30:52 - the Buffett News timeline came in very handy in finishing our homework assignment
31:24 - I said “numerically”, I meant “chronologically”
37:54 - if “Every time Mike says ‘shellback’” and “Every time Mike says his guitar number” aren’t in the rules of the WAOTNC Drinking Game, they darn well should be!
45:06 - The Paul Shaffer’s Day in Rock from January 16 could have been included in our previous episode, but missed it by mere minutes. Compare the comments to how Shaffer described the same incident last year, as heard in Episode 60.

06:28 - Mike’s “I’ll have to subscribe to that podcast” was voiced before he heard the clip and before he knew it was critical of Jimmy
06:55 - Sean Daly’s Buffet Hotel review.
07:23 - “[Stephen] Ross’ deal with Land Shark Lager was only through the 2009 season (or the Orange Bowl, whichever was longer). [CEO MIke] Dee said he expects to announce a naming rights deal this month’s end. ” From The Phins.com

29:17 - for the record, I’m being facetious
33:59 - Scott’s e-mail was reprinted as part of our License to Chill album review episode
39:50 - yes, I am aware of the hypocrisy of considering Hoot a Buffett album and not License to Chill. I agree, it makes no sense.
40:18 - Scott’s original Live in Anguilla rant is in Episode 56
42:59 - Mike’s original Live at Texas Stadium rant is in Episode 35
46:05 - for anybody interested, Schmoe was not drinking tonight because of his cold. Jennifer brought him a beer out of habit; and Schmoe kept it, giving it to me instead.
A show notes blog exclusive: here’s an outtake from this week’s show. This was the original ending, but it was cut for time and because the answer to Mickey’s question is rather predictable. Nevertheless, it provided some lively conversation which we hated to throw away [9:03 MP3].

Episode 117: Aughts to Tweens
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, December 30 2009 (10:00 PM - 12:00 AM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“More news, another concert medley, and if you can figure out our rules for the next contest, you deserve a prize right there. (Special guests: Hud, Jennifer, Brian, Nathan, and Jocelyn.)”
I’ve listened to our discussion of the next contest four or five times and still can’t figure out what the rules are. This however is what Scott had to say, when I begged him for some clarification. “Here is what I came away with…. Our listeners pick their top 5 songs of the decade….. we each pick 10…. which we will narrow to 5…........ The listener who matches our 5 will then receive the glass….... In case of a tie we draw out of a hat.”
Got it?
Send your top five Jimmy Buffett songs of the decade to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

00:57 - Schmoe is discussing Zodiac’s New Year’s party. You should’ve gone.
01:51 - Guy Lombardo, in Wikipedia

23:39 - and it will look like this
25:00 - NPR’s Most E-Mailed Stories podcast
45:24 - as you might surmise, all this was recorded before we formally began the podcast

04:42 - I also pissed Mike off, back during our listening party, when I joked the intro to “Rhunba Man” sounds like the Barney Miller theme
