Rock o' M’Ville

There were rumors in th' parkin' lot that Bret Michaels had shown up in a limo and would be guestin' onstage.  Amazingly, Michaels actually did show up on stage, singin' with Jimmy on “Margaritaville”.  I tried t' record th' whole thin', but th' best me iPhone 3G can shoot is at best about 6 frames a second.  (Figures th' brand new iPhone 4 can shoot in 720p, but wouldn’t be released till two days later).  Luckily th' “Margarillas” shot th' song right from th' stage and shared th' video on Facebook and YouTube.  The funny thin' is th' camera is facin' our section o' th' crowd.  If ye look close enough (and ye know whom t' look fer), ye can spot me, Smike, and Smike’s sister and brother-in-law.

Update [6/30]: another video o' this event has been posted, this time on Margaritaville.com’s Coconut Television page (found via Buffett World).  Don’t mind that “Bret Michaels sin's Margaritaville at Alpine Valley” caption; it’s still Pine Knob on Tuesday.

News From th' Front

Back home from another great Buffett show at Pine Knob.  Here are a few images from our amazin' Row A seats.  I shot some video too but th' quality is quite poor (me phone is two years auld); I at least used it fer th' freeze-frames o' Bret Michaels surprise duet on “Margaritaville” and when Jimmy came by us at th' end o' th' show.  The pictures have been upload t' our Photo Gallery, or ye can also check them out at me Flickr page or me Mobile Me gallery.

Episode 130: Where th' Party Boat Leaves From

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, June 16 2010 (9:30 PM - 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The laddies talk about th' recent Detroit River Parrothead Cruise, discuss th' latest Buffett headlines, go through th' Cincinnati and Houston shows, and look forward t' th' upcomin' Pine Knob concert (less than a week!).  (Special guest: Jennifer.  Cameo by The Black Scott.)

00:04 - we spent a lot o' time talkin' about TV shows—includin' Firefly, which I’d finally talked Smike into gettin' on Blu-ray
01:49 - Pier 500 in Wyandotte | Diamond Jack’s River Tours | Jim Auquier on Facebook
05:49 - all th' Buffett and Buffett-related songs are in our cruise video, with th' exception o' “Brown Eyed Girl” (since it really were bein' more like Van Morrison’s arrangement) and “Come Monday” (since I were bein' runnin' out o' videotape).  I managed t' get audio o' th' final song, “Lovely Cruise”, on me cellphone, but it were bein' so o'er-modulated I only used a snippet in th' video.
    06:51 - Chelsea‘s and Willow Tree
07:08 - th' cruise pictures in our Photo Gallery
08:28 - Pier 500’s tickets provided by Central Distributors
09:46 - Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From”
10:19 - Sunday, July 4 1993.  I took someone’s advice and, day o' th' concert, waited t' get tickets at Pine Knob’s will call window.
    14:17 - Silly Bandz—they’re spelled with a Z!  How silly!
15:24 - a lass were bein' handin' out Landshark leis and lanyards after th' cruise
17:26 - Jimmy visits th' Lawrenceville School, from Buffett World
17:58 - th' Hot in Cleveland premiere had aired on TV Land while we were recordin' and I’d had trouble rememberin' Jane Leeves’s character’s name on Frasier
18:01 - Jimmy sells his Palm Beach estate: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
Between our recordin' and th' publication o' th' episode, it were bein' revealed th' buyer is Jimmy’s next-door neighbor Jon Stryker, from Buffett News
18:38 - Jimmy tours Florida beach with Gov Charlie Crist: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention | AP article

20:20 - Fruitcakes on th' Radio winner Dave McCormick, from Radio M’ville’s Facebook page
21:13 - “Margaritaville Casino in Atlantic City Back on Track”, from Buffett World
21:29 - Briggs & Stratton generator story: before and after, from Buffett World
21:56 - Boston Globe interview: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
    22:37 - a reference t' Episode 56
22:43 - Buffett News’s WZLX story.  Interview recorded Friday, June 11, and complete MP3 available here.
25:24 - Jimmy attends NBA Finals game: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
25:36 - Garden & Gun‘s Buffett biodiesel story: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
26:24 - sorry, Mansfield, I got th' date wrong.  The Saturday show is o' course on June 19.
27:26 - Margaritaville Footwear (and link fer Famous Footwear).  Update: a day after postin' these notes, Smike texted us t' announce his shoes had arrived, well in time fer Tuesday’s concert.
42:38 - here’s a behind-th'-scenes secret: th' sped-up female rant is really a YouTube video o' Dixie Carter in Designin' Women
    47:00 - just because o' that comment, I bought WAOTNC.com
47:04 - yes, The Black Scott were bein' there, but he left before we started recordin'.  (That’s th' Tigers playin' th' Washington Nationals in th' background.  The Tigers won, 8-3.)

Pier 500 Parrot Head Cruise

Just back from tonight’s Parrot Head cruise, up and down th' Detroit River.  This were bein' what we were talkin' about back in Episode 127, th' cruise where Smike’s brother Jim (th' singer o' our theme song) were bein' goin' t' perform acoustic versions o' Buffett songs.  I shot video, recorded some audio, and also shot some photos with me cellphone.  Some notable highlights included a pole dance t' “Changes in Latitudes” — which I’m pretty sure has t' be a world-record, history-makin' first — and that th' drawin' fer th' free concert tickets were bein' won by our very own Cap'n Schmoe!
After Smike’s news from two weeks ago, it’s almost gettin' t' th' point where we have more tickets than we know what t' do with!  ...Not really, but close.  And not that we’re complainin'.
Hopefully I’ll be uploadin' th' video soon, but until then here are th' cellphone pictures, which I uploaded t' our Photo Gallery.
    Update: here’s th' video .

Episode 129: Dawn o' th' Duck

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, June 2 2010 (10:00 PM - 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Fleein' from th' bikers, we’re back at Zodiac.  Smike has some big news, Cap'n Schmoe gets some big news, and we finish our look at th' Big Top tour’s first leg and move on t' th' second.  (Special guest: Jennifer.  Cameo by Lee.)

Note: this episode had a terrible glitch about a half-hour in.  It’s been corrected and we encourage ye t' re-download.  Details below.
00:06 - when Cap'n Schmoe looked o'er th' bill fer th' pizza, he reported one o' th' toppin's were bein' “6P” which we assumed were bein' code fer somethin'.  Later on, it were bein' explained it’s really “GP” fer green peppers.  (And, yes, that comely wench sayin' “green peckers” at 00:12 is deliberate.  It’s an auld joke from Smike or Hud that she probably learned from us.)
00:49 - that’s a reference t' Jennifer sayin' “Leeno” instead o' Lee or Dino, before we started recordin'.  This led t' us callin' that comely wench “Jeeno”, which inevitably led t' our inventin' a “Zeeno” who plays straight-lubber and sin's a lot (which is a joke on th' Marx Brothers, fer all ye youngsters out there)
01:40 - we recorded soon after th' Tigers game where Armando Galarraga pitched a 28-batter perfect game, only t' have it taken away from that scurvey dog by a botched call by th' first base umpire.
Cap'n Schmoe’s sarcasm is aimed at Tiger admiral Jim Lehman’s statement, seen before we started recordin', that th' umpire is human and we all make mistakes.  Outraged by such a crappy call, we were out fer blood, and all th' good sportsmanship by th' Tigers, pitcher Galarraga, and umpire Jim Joyce, both that night and especially th' followin' day, were bein' really spoilin' our thirst fer vengeance.
    05:21 - The Abyss (1989), at IMDb
08:34 - Aquaman would be a better idea; Iron Man’s a better pop reference
10:29 - “ Buffett helps t' recover oiled wildlife in Gulf”, from Buffett News, actually, despite what I said.  I were bein' confused by th' blue backgrounds.  Buffett World titled their entry “Buffett Helpin' Boat Builder in Oil Spill Relief Effort”.
11:25 - Stephen Colbert on Dawn detergent, from Tuesday, June 1
11:50 - “Buffett and others honor Michael Douglas”, from Buffett News. | Buffett Performs at Event fer Michael Douglas, from Buffett World
12:48 - Catherine Zeta Jones is on Broadway in A Little Night Music, fer which she won a Tony on June 13.  Which seems like a good time t' mention Straight Guys Who Love Showtunes.com.
    13:06 - not exactly
15:02 - when I sent out an e-mail about th' contest, The Black Scott responded that he were bein' all o'er it.  When Smike wrote in t' say he’d placed an entry, The Black Scott wrote “Shoot !  There goes me chances!”
    15:49 - Margaritaville Cargo
17:05 - “Backstage with Buffett in Houston”, from Buffett News | “What It’s Like Backstage with Buffett”, from Buffett World
    18:33 - Detroiter Truck Stop
19:26 - “Margaritaville Foods Announces Additional Chicken Products”, from Buffett News | “Margaritaville Foods Introduces Frozen Chicken Chunks”, from Buffett World
    21:30 - Mexican Moonshine
23:44 - “Hello Summer, Goodbye Fees”, from Live Nation
25:20 - Palacenet.com has a great PDF map which shows every seat at Pine Knob
    31:27 - I also had a cold that week
    27:34 - a first hand Nashville account
27:46 - Nashville flood, in pictures
32:49 - I don’t know what’s worse, that a horrendous glitch somehow occurred at this spot or that it took two weeks fer me t' discover and correct it.  I encourage ye download th' fixed version; a quick way t' recognize it is it’s 51:31 long while th' original, damaged file were bein' 51:29.
39:00 - Jimmy’s second “Stay thirsty, me matey” is from th' intro t' “Cuban Crime o' Passion”

Episode 128: Tarballs

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 19 2010 (9:00 PM - 10:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Gibraltar MI
“The Black Scott’s back.  Smike talks about his Florida vacation and th' laddies rant about th' gaffe in th' Gulf.  A bit longer than expected, but it does include two concert roundups and were bein' recorded in two locations.

03:10 - Tom Petty were bein' on th' SNL 35th season finale, May 15 2010, with guest host Alec Baldwin
07:38 - “Margaritaville Gets a Makeover”, from Buffett World
    08:43 - th' Wayback Machine at Archive.org
09:01 - Smike and Cap'n Schmoe’s blog and their FSGL site
09:21 - Sherman, not t' be confused with Shurman
09:30 - Roger Clyne, at th' Live Music Archive
    09:41 - Lulu’s op-ed, and, while we’re at it, Lulu’s website
19:13 - I were bein' tryin' t' joke that Smike’s concern about “th' environment” might be about what were bein' goin' on in our room right then.  We’ve gotten kind o' used t' people passin' through our recordin' studio t' go out t' th' patio and smoke (even though, nowadays, that is just as illegal as smokin' inside th' bar), but we’ve ne'er had people walk in, turn th' electronic dart board on, and start playin'!
24:14 - sorry guys, those glitches were part o' th' original Radio Margaritaville broadcast.  I even recorded th' concert’s replay but th' glitches were repeated then too.
31:34 - I really should’ve set th' mic in place before recordin'
    33:25 - a reference t' Episode 41
38:30 - I’m pretty sure th' name has been mentioned in other episodes, but it got bleeped here anyway.
    40:50 - Goin’ Coastal
41:52 - th' picture Smike sent us
43:56 - double basses.  I meant, double basses.
48:24 - a bonus, from th' Late Show with David Letterman after we recorded our podcast
