February 24 2000: When I began this section of the site I was young and in love, in the full bloom of an infatuation with laserdiscs. DVD has now effectively supplanted laserdiscs (which I still view as more of a step sideways than a step forward), so I took this site down for a while. But, because of minimal interest, and mainly because of the prevalence of laserdiscs on eBay and other auction and online store sites, perhaps my experiences may be of some use after all.
So here is the Short Fat Guy movie site, back again, pretty much as it was. I hope you find it useful.
The following is a rundown and partial critique of laserdiscs I either own or have seen. I have tried to limit my impressions to that of transfer quality rather than on artistic content , touching on aspects of sound and video as well as, where possible, comparing the laserdisc with its VHS or cable-cast counterparts. It should be remembered that all the opinions expressed below are non-professional emotional reactions, and as such are wholly my own. The titles under discussion are almost exclusively letterboxed, and -- if I have any say in it -- are CAV and special editions.
