I must confess however that I’m not quite the pedant I’d like to be. This is made even more obvious by Your Dictionary.com’s list of the 100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in English<\/a>. I do know how to properly say \u201crespite\u201d, \u201cforte\u201d, \u201czoology\u201d (as shown in the list); but I have a nasty habit of sloppily pronouncing \u201cprerogative\u201d, \u201ctheater\u201d, and even \u201ctake for granted\u201d (as well as using \u201cnother\u201d and saying \u201cdrowned\u201d when I mean \u201cdrown\u201d).
    The careful pronunciation of \u201cdiphtheria\u201d is new to me, but then again the word hasn’t come up much in conversation. And apparently I’ve been pronouncing \u201celectoral\u201d wrong, along with \u201clambaste\u201d and \u201clong-lived\u201d — which I dispute — and \u201cparliament\u201d.
    Speaking of disputes, I must point out, flexing my pedant muscles, that the list is incorrect when it comes to \u201cduct tape\u201d. It is<\/i> called \u201cduck tape\u201d, and was given that name by the military<\/a> with regard to its waterproof properties. Also differentiating \u201cspitting image\u201d from \u201cspit and image\u201d, as the list does, is pointless, since the phrase should really be \u201cspirit and image\u201d.
