Two German students have inented a &#8220;&#8216;smart&#8217; beer mat&#8221;, which, <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2005\/TECH\/09\/30\/spark.beermat\/\">according to CNN<\/a>, &#8220;can sense when a glass is nearly empty, sending an alert to a central computer behind the bar so waiters know there are thirsty customers.&#8221; The beer mats, created by Saarland University students Matthias Hahnen and Robert Doerr, are made of plastic, which does not absorb moisture, but &#8220;ordinary cardboard mats could be placed on top of the plastic version to absorb liquid and display advertising&#8221;.
