Let the Games Begin

Yeah, I heard there’s some worldwide sporting event going on, but for me tonight’s opening ceremonies were for tomorrow’s Comerica Park show and involved watching Jimmy Buffett and Mike Utley broadcast a video chat from backstage, on StageIt.com.
Jimmy gave a spoiler about tomorrow’s setlist (about “All Night Long” specifically), played “Tin Cup Chalice” (by request) and “Boat Drinks” (for Hockeytown), and welcomed special guest Matt Hoggatt.
Jimmy also gave away a Landshark surfboard and Frozen Concoction Makers to the highest bidder. The show lasted about thirty-five minutes and was a very cool way to start this weekend’s festivities.
    Fins Up!

07:10 – the footage I shot isn’t great, and I was planning on just using freeze-frames from it — but, what the heck, here’s a quickly edited tailgate video for you. It pretty much covers what we talk about: our arrival, the electric fan, the generator, the unremitting sun, the truck with the pool, the big empty space in front of the M’ville booths, the cheeseburger cookies, the hot tequila, the lighted fan, even Mike doing the shark jaws. Everything but the breast-glitter guy. (Sorry.)

55:27 – on May 30 2001, the Elevation Tour, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The U2.com website then made it worse by referring to us as “Detroit, IN”.
57:40 – both these concert roundups were (are) part of the previous episode

From Schmoe’s crappy old cellphone

Steambath and a Show

It was the hottest day of the year!
I’m still worn out from this year’s concert, but here are few notes about the day…
Mike did a more elaborate tailgate than usual, hooking up an inverter to his car battery to power a fan and his Frozen Concoction Maker. The parking lot was definitely a Barometer Soup and I’m not ashamed to admit I drank a lot more water than Landsharks or margaritas. We didn’t do a lot of wandering around, clinging too much to the shade of our canopy, but I still plan on whipping up another tailgate video soon. Watch this space. Maybe.
The crowd rallied enough to be loud and appreciative by show time; but the people around me were lame and sat down way too often.
Even after sundown, it was still quite hot. We recorded a podcast from the parking lot, but we sound so beat that it makes for some less than exciting listening.
For now, here’s a batch of photos I took of the day, in our photo gallery. A far cry from last year’s front row seats, but oh well…
And, ultimately, as always, it was a pleasure and a hell of an evening.
