Episode 114: Ukes on Thursday

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, November 18 2009 (11:00 PM – 12:30AM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The latest news, a new concert round-up for the first of the November shows, and a review of Jake Shimabukuro’s recent concert in Ann Arbor. (Cameo appearances by Joe Maj, Lee, and Jennifer.)

(Not to be confused with Episode 20.)
00:09 – the blog to which Schmoe and Mike refer is our sister site, Tales from the North Coast
00:42 – the clips from the Bruce Springsteen concert (Friday, November 13) come from here and here
01:44 – the U2 clip is from my own recording, made Wednesday, May 30 2001
    04:11 – a How I Met Your Mother reference
    04:53 – in Episode 59
05:44 – link to Goodbye Hello at Little Flock Music
    06:55 – Baz’s Bar: Buffett World’s write-up | Buffett News’s write-up (with links to the videos)
    07:01 – Le Select: Buffett World’s write-up | Buffett News’s write-up
07:10Buffett News’s link to the video
07:39Mac McAnally website | CMA Awards website
08:01 – curiously the Radio Margaritaville page at Sirius.com showed five concerts for November while the front page at Radio Margaritaville.com showed only four. (The latter was correct.)
Here’s the Link for The Zac Brown Band; and here’s Buffett News’s write-up.
    08:38 – Land Shark Stadium performance: Buffett World’s write-up
09:08 – I got the song title right in Episode 112, but Buffett World tricked me into saying it wrong now — grrr!
09:30 – once again, the link to Boo-fay Hotel on Amazon. And the link to the poll on our WAOTNC fan page at Facebook
10:49 – I don’t know when Mike first heard Jimmy talk about Buffet Hotel, but the clip from Late Night is in Episode 107
    11:14 – Margaritaville Rum: Buffett World’s write-up | Buffett News’s write-up (and, yes, my saying “boo-fay” here was pure simple-minded gaffe)
12:28 – evidently there was some fine-turning to Radio Margaritaville’s Thanksgiving schedule. The Paris show was scheduled for 7:15 at “press time” but since got moved to 8:40 PM. If you missed the concert due to this mix-up, you can catch it Saturday (11/28) at 6 PM and Sunday (11/29) at 10 PM (EST).
17:32 – presumably the “top secret gig” is Jake’s performance with Bette Midler, before Queen Elizabeth, for the Royal Variety Performance 2009, on Monday, December 7, in Blackpool.
20:26 – after all the Springsteen talk I couldn’t help underscoring how Jimmy got the day wrong throughout the concert. It was a Tuesday.
22:28 – a lyric update for “A Lot to Drink About”
23:08 – Jimmy might have mentioned this before, but it seemed a “Get it On Paper” reference out of nowhere was worth keeping. I also liked Jimmy’s off-hand “argh” during “Pirate”.
26:30 – we only decided that morning to go, not that we decided to go in the morning
27:09Grizzly Peak Brewing Company, in Ann Arbor
    27:59The Ark, in Ann Arbor
38:16 – I couldn’t find it while searching “Jake Shimabukuro”, but I found it while searching for “Annon”. Here’s the link to “Annon” on iTunes. And the link to “Annon” in the Amazon MP3 Downloads store.
38:16 – the setlist for Jake’s November 12 concert in Ann Arbor:

Annon
Blue Roses Falling
Me & Shirley T
Let’s Dance
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Sakura Sakura
Piano-Forté
Five Dollars Unleaded
In My Life
Norwegian Wood
Orange World
Encores:
Bohemian Rhapsody
Ave Maria (Schubert)

40:53Here’s a great video of Jake playing “Bohemian Rhapsody” (third video down), on The Adventure Life.org.
43:08buy Jake Shimabukuro’s live album and other of his CDs at his online store
44:05 – the interference is back, in the right channel, and it was caused by Jennifer’s phone
44:59 – Shirley Temple: on Wikipedia and at her official site. But I mean, come on, there are enough cable channels showing old movies that I can’t believe there’s still a need to explain who Shirley Temple or Henry Fonda or Jimmy Stewart are. …Kids these days.
51:40Schmoe’s Cantina.com; no merch there, but the domain is ours

Episode 113B: Pwned By a River

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, November 4 2009 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The boys analyze Mac McAnally’s new album (by way of his 9/28 Radio Margaritaville interview), Mickey has news and another concert roundup, Mike complains about his shoes, and Schmoe dredges up some old traumatic memories.

I had second thoughts about using “pwned” in the title, since that term is so worn out and over-used…only to find out Schmoe and Mike had never seen it before
04:00 – uh-oh! A cat story? Just eight hundred ninety subscribers to go…
05:42 – Game 6 of the World Series was on TV, and the Yankees clinched the championship over the Phillies 7 to 3
    06:39 – hey! where’s the Double-Entendre Alarm?
10:54MTV’s story on the Live Nation / Justin Timberlake tequila deal (and, for the hell of it, the official link to 901 tequila)
12:07WMBF’s news story on the possibility of Jimmy coming to Myrtle Beach, with the original video clip (which was re-edited for the podcast)
    13:25Meeting of the Minds
13:52Jackson Quigley’s new blog | buy JimmyDOTcom used from Amazon
14:24Joystiq.com’s story on the “Margaritaville” patent, and the Patent Office’s listing itself
    17:42our Twitter page
17:51Houston Chronicle‘s story on Kinky Friedman’s Pet Files
18:24 – you can pretty much guess that, after making a point to correct Mr Utley, Jimmy will make the same mistake a few minutes later on stage…
21:25 – Jimmy read messages off a lot wandering beach balls that night. …And doesn’t he sound a little cruel making fun of Mr Utley?
26:53Mac’s new album [at Amazon]. And for good measure Mac’s website.
26:59 – we never explicitly say but our review is based more on Mac’s interview on Radio Margaritaville, where Steve Huntington played the entire album, than on the CD itself
27:57Willis Alan Ramsey’s Wikipedia page. Schmoe’s man-crush was first revealed in Episode 35
29:11 – “Jimmy from Florida” made his first appearance at the Cincinnati pre-show interview, an audio clip of which is in Episode 107
33:01 – yes, Jeff Hanna of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
33:39 – “gospel piano”, in fact. And the lyric I had in mind is “It seems to me, that the neediest people are the last ones to ask you for help”. Or maybe it’s “It seems to me, that the happiest people are the first ones to offer their help”
34:39 – Joe Maj mentioned this back in Episode 92 — and here’s another ringtone, this time from Schmoe
35:31 – my apologies for all the chewing. I didn’t think the mics would pick it up so well.
38:45 – “Do you know what the definition of a hero is? Someone who gets other people killed.” Serenity, written and directed by Joss Whedon (2005). Buy it.
39:07 – the line is “The nature of a hero requires a leap of faith”. I’m not sure where I got “the mark of a hero”. Maybe from some commercial. But I still think the whole “Find out what you’re made of / When it’s your time to say ‘You first'” motif really only works best in the first instance [emphasis mine].
44:52 – it seems how I described myself makes it seem I can’t be satisfied too, but I guess what I mean is a comparison between someone who’s always striving for something better, in expectation of the next upgrade, compared to someone who gets handed the best of everything and finds fault with it. But even that description seems too fine a point.
    46:02 – I’m confusing it with Jimmy’s new album
47:01then why not buy it on iTunes?
48:38 – Jennifer really did accidentally call our beers “Landscape” instead of “Landshark”. Unfortunately this happened before we started recording.

    01:03 – Margaritaville robbery: Buffett News’s write-up | Buffett World’s write-up, a Cayman news broadcast, their description, and the follow-up story

04:59Midnight Flyer from the Buffett World forum uploaded the DRALS video. Read about it at Buffett World or go directly to YouTube.
06:07 – the previous episode is Episode 112, the previouser one is Episode 108. Here’s the Walworth County article Listener Ed forwarded to us.
17:23 – remarkably, this song title was only just brought up, in Episode 109, by Listener Tom (as a potential boat name). He got it from Buffett News, which listed it as a potential track on Far Side of the World
19:17 – “Stadium”. I meant to say University of Phoenix Stadium. Anyway, here’s the story about them trying to stop tailgating.
19:53?uestlove’s interview about Yacht Rock and Jimmy Buffett appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
20:18Will Kimbrough on writing with Jimmy Buffett. Apologies to Jackson Quigley for not recognizing his new blog.
23:35link to Mac’s new album, Down By the River, at Amazon
24:15 – as you can probably guess, the joke was recorded first, which is why Hud is around again
26:08 – Mike forwarded his mom’s joke to us back on Friday, May 22 2009
27:23 – And this is what had Mike so speechless.

26:53 – Scott has moved to the other side in order to plug his laptop in
    29:11 – in Episode 107
29:58 – yeah, but who knows what other changes JJ Abrams will be making?
31:15 – we went through all this in Episode 2 et al
47:44 – here’s the video Scott promised (restored after Facebook changed their embed code):

    52:44 – …and then multiplied by 42

00:33 – speaking of ringtones, there’s a good one right there
    03:21Episode 100
03:28Greg’s “Volcano” ringtone, in MP3 format. You may need to convert it to use on your own phone.

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, September 9 2009 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Back at Zodiac for the start of season eight, with the latest Buffett news, some sports highlights, and even a few words about Michael Jackson. (Special guest: Jennifer.)

That difference in sound was caused when transporting the recorder to Magic Bag for the Roger Clyne concert. I screwed up in not double-checking the recorder’s settings before tonight’s session.
01:23 – Jennifer After Dark, the first appearance of what will become our new running gag
02:33Mickey Hart and his desk drawer drum

Episode 109: I Love the Then

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, August 26 2009 (9:30 PM – 11:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“Highlights from the end of the fourth leg of the tour plus a look back at the 1987 Pine Knob concert, as season seven comes to a close. (Special guests: Scott, Chuck, Jenna, and Danielle.)

    Warning: it’s a long one.
00:11 – U2’s Joshua Tree concert at the Silverdome was Thursday, April 30 1987 — their first stadium show
00:19 – you can barely hear him say it, but the concert Chuck is talking about is Sammy Hagar at Cobo Hall. He seems to have a Sammy Hagar fixation this show.
00:22 – I never said, but for the record, my first concert was the Detroit Pops playing music from science fiction movies at Meadowbrook; and my first rock concert was Loverboy at Pine Knob in 1981
01:17listen to the 1987 show we’ll be talking about
02:23 – I still have my ticket stub, but what we’re reading off is the LADI34T 1987 setlist page
05:46the video of which he speaks. I’ll withhold comment about him likening Parrot Head tailgating to Sammy Hagar’s crowd
07:27 – “Beautiful Swimmer”, as mentioned on Buffett News
    07:59GAC TV.com’s George Strait interview
    08:53New York Magazine‘s Blue Parrot write-up
09:20 – that came out wrong. What she said was that with her being from Texas, she’s very particular about guacamole.
    09:32Press of Atlantic City.com’s write-up
10:50 – “[…] a compilation of live renditions of 13 tracks from his 1985 release, Songs You Know By Heart.”
    11:38AV Club’s article on B-52s
12:06 – not to be confused with Something Awful.com
13:00the July 17 post at Scott Kenemore’s Zombie Blog
    14:26Stub Hub’s Top 20 Rockin’ Cities
17:03 – Cleveland was not in the top 20
17:20 – I know: bugs have six legs, arachnids have eight. It was an attempt at a joke.
24:46 – the inevitable link to our waterlogged Episode 17
33:28 – Greg forwarded his sister’s photos to us on Thursday, July 16 2009:

Hud, Schmoe, Mickey, and Larry are in there somewhere

Schmoe and Hud, at the gate

Schmoe & Greg in the pavilion, with Mr & Mrs Hud in the background

43:34 – I took a stab at it, but the year was 1912.
44:30 – and here’s Schmoe trying on his vintage 1987 concertwear. I had my Cyber-shot for photos and Chuck took video with his cellphone:

Schmoe sucks in his gut

    45:41 – “Look confused”…

“Look confused”

Our hero

    48:41 – 2003’s Meet Me in Magaritaville I assume
50:31 – the Raven Gallery in Southfield, now the site of Sweet Lorraine’s
    51:48Catherine Deneuve’s IMDb page
53:08 – “La Kenta” is off the 1987 Club Trini CD Jubilee. (Not, as I guessed at later, 1988’s Heat.)
58:49 – we figure it out at 63:12
61:01 – the “>1987 setlist page has file sizes noted, for download purposes. As far as times go: it’s 5:14 for the intro and 3:18 for the song
61:22 – once again, my concert notes can be read at the bottom of the 1987 setlist page
63:12 – what we should’ve been talking about at 58:49
67:23 – at Jones Beach, Wantaugh NY

Episode 108: Concerted Effort

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, August 19 2009 (10:00 PM – 11:00 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“Mike, Schmoe, and Mickey take a closer look at the recent Pine Knob concert. (Guest appearances by Jacob and Nathan.)

I, Mickey, formally concede, from the outset:
    A) Schmoe is right about “Margaritaville” on You Had to Be There. Frankly, I have no idea now what I was talking about. And, 2) It does sound like I say “1997”. I still don’t see how I could confuse the years; I can only assume it was a case of lazy-mouth.
    And now, the show notes:
03:23 – our tribute slideshow is still viewable at nothingbutmonkeys.com
    03:47Cheeseburger in Caseville.com
04:13 – once again, the 2009 Cheeseburger Festival logo
    04:55the photo in question
05:17 – you can hear us bitch about the absence of portajohns at the end of Episode 17: “Wet Wet Wet”
05:56 – the forecast for Clarkston on August 13 was sunny with a high of 83°F
08:02 – the concert that year (2003) was like a freaking Carnival Cruise Line show, with native dancers, jugglers, and fire-eaters.
10:57 – another link to my concert photos
18:37 – concert clips are once again from SunLover, over at the Buffett News discussion board, since, as you might have guessed, we were busy that night
20:11 – a commercial for Ford, plus subliminal product placement for Dodge and Toyota
21:12Playing for Change CD/DVD [Amazon link]. Note: Jimmy and the Coral Reefers are not part of the video as included on the DVD
    23:09 – screenwriter/director John Hughes died Sunday, August 8 2009
23:30 – I don’t remember now. It could have been “Pirate” or maybe it was “Last Mango”.
24:56 – just ignore this whole part. Mike might be right: maybe I heard an old recording on Radio Margaritaville’s “Buffett Buffet”.
28:43 – “A Pew Research survey released last month showed that 81 percent of respondents between ages 16-29 said they liked The Beatles. Eleven percent said they dislike the band and only 4 percent said they have never heard of them.” Source: CNN
    32:51The Office, Season 4, Episode 13
33:22our tailgate video, on Vimeo. It’s also viewable at YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, and Viddler.
    36:04the Tahiti™ Frozen Concoction Maker™
    40:41Scott’s photos, on Facebook
    43:13 – movie quote from Stripes (1981)

Episode 107: NPR Weakened Edition

Show Notes:
Recorded mainly Thursday, August 13, and Monday, August 17
“An odds and ends episode, collecting the latest headlines, concert clips from the most recent leg of the tour, and our live, on-the-scene report from the Pine Knob parking lot.

    Holy crap! A new episode!
    02:16 – Walter Cronkite memorial: Buffett News’s write-up | Buffett World’s write-up
    02:56 – Coastal Marina: Buffett News write-up | Buffett World write-up
    03:15 – Stephen Talkhouse: Buffett News write-up | Buffett World write-up
03:35Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Buffett News write-up | Buffett World write-up (and rehearsal photos)
03:50 – at least as I experienced on Brit Rail
05:46Mac’s album on Amazon | Mac’s album on iTunes
    06:01T-Pain’s fight song, with video
09:19 – couldn’t resist including this reprise of Walter Cronkite’s cameo, originally from the 1999’s Beach House tour
11:26 – this clip was heavily edited for time, just to include Utley’s cool tack piano
26:39 – recorded August 5. We hadn’t officially started, which explains the TV noise in the background. The webpage to which Scott refers is Greg’s Facebook profile. And the page to which Mike refers is the Nothing But Monkeys site we created. (The viewer total at this writing is 546.)
29:41 – no one made a move to start podcasting so I didn’t even take the gear out, using my cellphone for an off-the-cuff recording. Here’s a cellphone photo from that night (August 12), to prove we did assemble with plans to podcast
31:20the big tailgate video, viewable at Vimeo, Viddler, Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube.
31:39 – sorry about the distortion; I held the phone up too close, not expecting it to pick up the sound as well as it did
33:08 – I know. That doesn’t make any sense to me either
    39:55 – what a rip-off! He’s padding the book with duplicate chapters!
41:22 – as discussed in Episode 106B — only the last episode. Schmoe!
48:36 – not a still camera, but my full-sized Canon HV20 HD video camera (which was used to shoot the video mentioned at 31:20)
52:15 – sorry we ended on a puke story, but that’s the way it went

Added July 29: from yesterday’s E-Edition of the Detroit Free Press

Added July 30: our tribute video to Greg can be seen at Nothing But Monkeys.com. Containing plenty of photos of us looking young and thin, it also includes lots of shots from past Parrot Head parties and tailgates.
