Club Trini Live (1999)

I know I should be finishing Episode 105, but instead I’ve dug into the archives to reassemble a new edit of Club Trini performing in the Pine Knob parking lot, June 8 1999. The edits might be a little abrupt, but this is pretty much everything I shot that day.

Someone at TRMS is a Parrothead

When worlds collide. All three “Weak in Review” stories from Friday’s Rachel Maddow Show have a remarkable connection to our podcast.

They used Buffett music for the first two stories and then, for good measure, wrapped up with a Jonas story just for Scott and Schmoe! Could Kent Jones be one of our listeners? (Or would that mean he’s weak?)
Actually, this is not the first time Buffett music has appeared in The Rachel Maddow Show

(The video at Viddler includes pop-up notes. Video is also available at at Vimeo, at our Facebook group, and was originally posted on youTube in two parts.)
04:57 – featuring the talents of Jim Auquier (The Jimmy Show) and Rob Norum of, together, Acoustic Rewind.
05:30 – we had to whip up a final verse on the spot. I think Scott offered the “Shadows tall” line, about which I was skeptical. I doubted the tilt of the Earth was substantial enough to change shadows in Autumn and the rhyme smacked of desperation. The following morning Scott “took me to school”, offering the following information in an e-mail.

Summer sunlight is more direct. More energy per unit area is received by sun. Thin[k] of the longer shadows cast in winter. Also think of the beam of a flashlight illuminating a spot on a table: Direct illumination provides maximum light per unit area. Tilting the flashlight means that the beam is spread over more area but its is giving of the same energy per unit time. Thus the energy per unit time per area is smaller in the tilted case, and similarly as applies to the sun in the winter.

10:21 – …that said, the acoustic guitar in the clip you heard was Jim Auquier
16:39Live from Key West – EP on iTunes
19:56 – Scott means the cellphone video on YouTube, as mentioned on Buffett News
20:55 – Cyndi Lauper sang “iko Iko” on her 1986 album True Colors
21:33 – hear that crackling in the left speaker? That’s not our usual cellphone interference. You are witnessing the start of the slow death of my beloved Core Sound mics.
21:51Buffett News’s write-up of Jimmy at the Jim Clark & Kristy Hinze nuptials
23:42 – “Buffett Looking at New Sea Plane”, as mentioned on Buffett World

05:34two videos from the Obama rally
    05:50Madelyn Dunham, in Wikipedia
06:05lots of Mohegan Sun videos on YouTube.  Greg is giggling because my nickname in high school was “Unk”.
06:36 – a reference to the hologram effect CNN used as their Election Night gimmick
08:07 – what we’d like to think is a reference to the joke at the end of Episode 54
    09:24Radio Margaritaville | Sirius | XM Radio
10:22 – you can hear me muttering about whether we had a done a show after Halloween.  I thought we had, but at this point we had not.  Our discussion and my subsequent research were all edited out
10:35 – have we mentioned Greg likes monkeys?
    11:07 – yay, it’s the Landshark I ordered!
11:16 – first introduced in Episode 72, the sound denotes an edit so bad there’s no point in hiding it.  Can you name the song whence it originates?
11:29 – our videos: here, on Vimeo, Viddler, or on YouTube

16:18 – Scott didn’t share that exact photo, but the top one is similar:

Our waitress Jennifer

Our waitress Jennifer

Aw, what the heck. Here’s a picture of Lee too.

Scott saved a Jennifer’s roller-coaster video too. It’s similar to the video of Mike from Episode 77.

16:35 – a perhaps intentional reference to the webchat scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall?
16:51 – this went on a heck of a lot longer than included here
    17:21 – see 11:16
18:00 – sadly, this is what passes for political discourse in our crowd.  Jeez, what a pathetic display of forensics.  We make the guys on Fox News look smart.
This too went on a heck of a lot longer than included here.
23:57 – recorded in 2004, “Taking My Country Back” was available at takingmycountryback.com, but that site is now defunct.  You can at least hear the song in mono in this YouTube video.
27:54 – something for all you shippers out there

Our VHS Tape Library

Sadly, we did not record a show last night.  It wasn’t due to low attendance, it wasn’t due to technical problems.  We even had an agenda, not least of which was to say goodbye to Captain Tony, who passed away on November 1.  Despite all this, it became apparent that are plans would be a no-go and we ended up not recording.
We’re very sorry about letting another week go by without a new episode, and Schmoe had spent the morning sending out e-mails detailing new plans and projects.  I have plans for new content too, and since I couldn’t announce it in the podcast I might as well announce it here.  Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the

Wastin’ Away On the North Coast VHS Tape Library

It’s a collection of Jimmy’s TV appearances we have archived on our old VHS tapes, dating back to 1984, dating back to Jimmy’s mustache.  This is stuff that not even Buffett World and Buffett News have.
You can access the videos at our own page: http://www.wastinaway.net/videos
or our page at Vimeo (though the collection is not complete)
or at Viddler (even less complete)
or even at YouTube (albeit in lesser quality, and excepting any videos over ten minutes long).
This has been some weeks in the offing and I hope it makes up for the lack of a new episode.  If I may make a recommendation, why not check out how young we look in this 1989 video.  It’s almost like watching our first podcast.  You can see we haven’t changed much, except maybe for the giant glasses.
    Enjoy!

Episode 77: Don’t Drink and Drivel

Show Notes:
Recorded Sunday, July 20 2008 (12:30 AM – 1:30 AM) at Casa de Schmoe
“Mike was free and in town which set in motion this bonus podcast. We study the first concert of the third leg of the tour; but we waited so long to begin, we were well in our cups by the start recording, leading to one of our wildest, loudest, most drunken episodes!

I think the original intent was to podcast with the Alpine Valley show in the background, but instead we ended up listening to the show and partying. And then, later on, Scott remembered the RCPM show in Florida was being streamed online. (The stream was archived — both RCPM and opening act Shurman — and we embedded it into the blog the following morning, as seen below.)
Also, I took advantage of Schmoe’s wi-fi to do our own streaming, broadcasting some of the podcast live on Live Video.com. Here is the footage from that failed experiment. The spill is Greg’s. And Mike is writhing about to the Photo Booth roller coaster effect on Scott’s MacBook.

That said, here are the show notes:
00:00 – as always, Schmoe and Mike are reminiscing over then events covered in Episode 69A
01:31 – as seen in the show notes of Episode 71
    03:20 – told you. It’s Episode 2
03:29 – I can’t even remember is this made it into a show or not, but this is a reference to Mike and Schmoe texting each other in order to listen to RCPM’s “Mekong” at the same time. [Oh yeah that’s right: it was first mentioned in the Episode 75 transcript.]
07:42 – from “The Nude Man” episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Season 3. And yes, I am liberally paraphrasing the skit.
08:02Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog had premiered the previous week, on July 15
08:47 – … you know … on the Orca? … in the movie Jaws?
09:56 – at long last, we’ve uploaded the photo in question. Check out Greg’s pose here and here, and then picture Mike with his hands up by his chest like bunny paws. Actually, why not picture Mike in a whole big bunny costume? (I am reminded we made similar jokes in Episode 65 — when Greg was in attendance!)
12:48 – both of these were mentioned in Schmoe’s ultimate setlist, also from Episode 71
    13:11 – Schmoe’s fourcast was discussed in Episode 74
18:41 – no, I think it was “Coconut Telegraph” that had the rough start
    23:29Sailor Jerry
25:26 – mentioned during our “Lost Episode” (Episode 75), here’s some YouTube footage of that appearance
29:21 – Schmoe refers to the Season 2 episode of WKRP in Cincinnati titled “For Love or Money”

Episode 75: The Missing Episode

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, July 9 2008 (9:30 PM – 11:00 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub. Brownstown MI
“Also know as the “Bzz, bzz-bzz-bzz, bzz, bzz” Episode. Schmoe, Greg, Scott, Mickey, DJ, and Mike engage in another fourcast, with disastrous results.

Mike is back in Houston, and our return to using a speakerphone was our worst attempt ever. Maybe it’s because it’s the first time we’ve tried this at Joe’s Prime Time, maybe it’s because I don’t know what I’m doing, maybe I should set everything up before I start drinking; but, not only did we get GSM noise again, we got continual and constant GSM noise!
I tried playing around with the recording but there’s no way to salvage it. I tried turning it mono (using the side with slightly less buzz), I tried re-equalizing it, I tried various filters, but nothing worked well enough. The more I try to phase out the GSM noise the more I lose in overall audio quality; and the less tweaking I do the more annoyingly unlistenable it stays.
    So here’s a compromise.
Instead of the usual MP3 in our podcast feed, I’ve typed up a transcript of the recording. Download the PDF here or read it below, and this way we can share what we recorded without your having to suffer through listening to it. Pretend it’s just like one of our other shows. Or get some friends together and act out all the parts. (Make sure to use some kind of effect for Mike, such as talking into a coffee can.)

For the heck of it, we turned the transcript into an ebook for Kindle, too. You can buy it from Amazon’s Kindle Store (for a 99¢ fee, mind you) or you add it manually by downloading it here (for free). We have a free ePub version as well, for iPads and Nooks.
Update: added August 29, here’s an outtake, videotaped after the show, where Greg gives his review of the Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker:
