This was back on June 10, of course, but I didn’t go through all the footage and edit it till today.

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, June 25 2008 (9:00 PM – 10:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub. Brownstown MI
“We’ve complained in the past about the prevalence of cover songs in Jimmy’s albums and on tour, but now, in a new North Coast fourcast, we choose what covers we do like. A big crowd tonight with Schmoe, Greg, Mike, Mickey, Scott, Patti, and Larry on the panel, with guest appearances by DJ, Nathan, and Rachel.”
We had a huge turnout for this one. Scott returned, Greg was back, and even past participants Patti and Larry showed up. All making for a lively and loud conversation. In fact, we had such a big crowd Scott and DJ sat at a different table, which explains why Scott sounds a bit off-mic.
The episode title obviously refers to the far superior Coverville podcast, at Coverville.com. (There was talk of maybe using “Coveritaville” instead.)
00:11 – it sounds like Schmoe says “Jew”. This isn’t an edit, so don’t blame me. That’s the way it sounds on the recording.
00:17 – Patti hasn’t been on a panel since Episode 55, and, before that, way back in Episode 2. Her homecoming might have been a bigger deal if she hadn’t just appeared in our tailgate recording two episodes ago.
00:51 – Greg was really hoping to get a picture of Rachel when she came back to our room, so it was particularly funny when it was Larry who brought us our round of beers instead (at 03:55).
01:21 – Margaritaville Rum, via Buffett News. Out in September.
02:24 – Nadirah Shakoor’s YouTube page. …Or is that iTube? …uTunes? (Don’t forget to click “More info” for the full write-up on this video and her album.)
03:22 – Join the Band info at Little Feat.net | Link to Amazon’s page | Link to iTunes’s soon-to-be-live page
04:24 – This is the chef, at the bar’s entrance, of which Schmoe speaks. And, as you can probably guess, Greg’s instruction to go left is deliberately incorrect (hence my comment).
05:22 – note to self: the pig’s name is Rumpy and the boy’s name is Barley. The book even states this on every chapter, but I still get them confused.
05:53 – Famous Dave’s
07:40 – Amazon link for Sonny Landreth’s From the Reach album
08:15 – Amazon link for Jake Shimabukuro’s Gently Weeps album
08:36 – the band is Pearl Jam, with their “2008 Bootleg Program“. The concerts actually are available on CD, if desired, but are also available in MP3 or FLAC.
Little Feat sells their concerts too! Come on, Jimmy, start serving concerts at the Radio Margaritaville site!
08:52 – I think this is what Larry is talking about
09:34 – Commonwealth Displays
10:51 – Link to Zodiac Racquet Club … as soon as they join the 21st century and get a website
11:40 – Scott is of the opinion we’re repeating ourselves with this episode’s fourcast. He is part right. In Episode 23, Covers Charge, one question in our fourcast dealt with our favorite cover song. And now, all four parts of tonight’s fourcast deal with our favorite covers.
19:58 – actually, it’s written by Big Al Anderson, Stephen Bruton, and Sharon Vaughn; and has in fact been covered at least twice. Big Al Anderson’s version of “Trip Around the Sun” is on After Hours, available at Big Al Anderson.com; while Stephen Bruton‘s version is on Nothing But the Truth.
20:04 – a Goldmine writer’s opinion on Covers vs Remakes
23:08 – feel free to add your own cricket sound effect here
24:09 – a.k.a. Southgate Fireworks.com. (And if those commercial breaks aren’t enough, why not another one?)
26:03 – it irks me I studied the discography so carefully but I still forgot about the Margaritaville Café compilations.
28:42 – Will Kimbrough – and, hey, he’s got a podcast!
29:50 – Jesse Winchester
30:55 – “California Promises” is off the Steve Goodman album Affordable Art, available at Steve Goodman.net
31:04 – “Boats to Build”, written by Guy Clark, is the title track of his album and is also on Jerry Jeff Walker’s Cowboy Boots and Bathin’ Suits
31:13 – “She’s Going Out of My Mind” is off Mac McAnally’s 1989 album Simple Life; and, by the way, “It’s My Job” is off his 1980 album Cuttin’ Corners
33:46 – that’s Larry’s ringtone, which I guess, being written by Irving Szathmary, could be considered its own cover
34:23 – I know, we’re all thinking it, but she was referring to her fists
34:49 – the “U.P.” refers of course to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Did Rachel tell us she’s from St Ignace? I don’t remember.
35:57 – oops, I was supposed to edit that part out. Cue the evil, Dr Horrible-like laugh!
And finally, here’s another behind-the-scenes video from our recording session, with outtakes and deleted scenes.
Show Notes:
Recorded Saturday, June 7 2008 (10:00 PM – 11:00 PM) at Casa de Schmoe, Dearborn MI
“The boys make their deadline just under the wire, reviewing the last three of their ultimate setlists in time to hear Jimmy’s own carefully chosen setlist on Tuesday. (Background vocals: Schmoe’s & Mike’s kids and a few oscillating fans.)”
Phew. I’m too old for these ten-hour, all-nighter editing sessions. I was determined to publish this episode before the June 10 concert — secretly in hopes our selections might somehow influence Jimmy’s own setlist — so I edited between midnight and seven AM Monday night, crashed till nine, and then finished up the episode at noon. And, then caught a nice cold for the concert.
But enough about me. Here are the notes:
5:15 – Rock Band DLC “Cheeseburger” on YouTube. As always, the clips has been edited for time.
6:02 – Rock Band DLC “Volcano” on YouTube
6:28 – Rock Band DLC “Margaritaville” on YouTube
6:35 – oh yeah, that was Episode …hgshajmmsn
6:53 – and who appeared in Episode 24
7:35 – the June 8 New York Times bestsellers [via Buffett News]
7:45 – the Billboard interview [via Buffett News]
7:50 – UPI’s “Not Retiring Any Time Soon” article [via Buffett News]
8:28 – iTunes link for Jackson Browne’s “Lives in the Balance” song (just imagine the chorus sung slower and less emphatic)
9:05 – Walmart’s sale page and Mailboat Records’ sale page. It doesn’t look like Sam’s Club sells the DVD online.
9:27 – another incident with Greg which has become folklore.
This is Scott’s setlist
for you to read along (as a PDF),
just like the Word DOC he sent us back on April 29.
But, as mentioned in Episode 68, this, for some reason, is what Greg saw…
10:30 – Club Trini’s Late Night Live
13:26 – and…
this is Schmoe’s long, involved, and highly detailed setlist
(also as a PDF)
14:24 – at Pine Knob they’ll let you get by with drinking if you at least conceal your beverage, which led me to the ingenious idea of pouring my beers into a Vernor’s ginger ale bottle.
14:43 – Orson Welles by way of Edgar Alan Poe by way of Alan Parsons’ Tales of Mystery and Imagination (the 1987 remaster)
16:43 – a lame impression of Homer in “Flaming Moes”
22:06 – Jay and the Americans
25:15 – Mike drafted his setlist on the spot and there was no need to e-mail it to anyone, thus there is no PDF to share. Instead, we’ll just note the titles as he reads them:

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 28 2008 (10:30 PM – 11:30 PM) at Casa de Schmoe, Dearborn MI
“The title refers to both Crazy Rummy and the fact Greg and Mickey finally offer up the
first of our ultimate setlists. (Special guests: Nathan and Rachel the Singing Waitress.)”
Joe’s Prime Time was packed when we assembled. We hadn’t realized so many people would show up to watch Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals there and we were forced to start recording much later than usual while we waited for the place to clear out.
03:44 – Margaritaville Cargo.com site, the Margaritaville Retail site, and the Soles of the Tropics footwear site
05:10 – the June 1 New York Times Bestsellers List and Publishers Weekly‘s list
05:59 – Amazon’s Swine Not? listing
06:48 – here’s an image of Greg’s Excel spreadsheet setlist (click on it to download the full spreadsheet, in PDF format):
07:57 – that was a waitress noticing how bored Nathan was
11:00 – Timothy B Schmit.com
11:21 – recently discussed in Episode 51
11:31 – as discussed in Episode 69B, Mike has developed a fondness for the sounds of the Carnival Steel Drum Collection Jimmy Buffett tribute CDs. Here are Amazon’s links to Volume 8 and Volume 11
11:50 – Clarence Clemons.com
13:56 – Martina McBride.com
14:08 – Shari Belafonte’s Wikipedia page
16:49 – and here’s my list, copy-and-pasted right out of Notepad. (Why Notepad? I wrote it at work.)

22:45 – actually I think Greg was ripping on Mike, who, following a concert many years ago, had been disappointed Jimmy had not performed “Changes” when Jimmy actually had. And I didn’t even tell my own story well. What I meant was that immediately upon finishing “One Particular Harbour” I guessed that Jimmy’s very next introduction was for “One Particular Harbour”. I’ve learned to hold my liquor better since then.
23:47 – ** SPOILER WARNING ** here’s some behind the scenes trivia for you. Through some clever editing, the waitress I order my Landshark from at 22:56 and the waitress who forgets my Landshark are actually two different people.
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 24 2008 (6:00 PM – 12:00 AM) at Casa de Schmoe, Dearborn MI
“A bonus podcast, recorded at Casa de Schmoe. The boys rehash the headlines, review Swine Not?, take another look at fantasy setlists, and learn something disturbing about Greg. (Background vocals by Schmoe’s & Mike’s kids and Cathy.)”
Our first podcast with a teaser trailer! Catch Scott’s lame-ass RSVP as it comes in!…
I’m chagrined to admit this episode was delayed by several hours because I could not come up with a name! And embarrassed even more that after all that time, this was the best I could come up with. Alternate titles included “The Pit and the Porcus” (get it? an Edgar Alan Poe reference — zing! kerpow!), “Eine Schweine Nachtarmpit” (Mozart! pwned!), and “Days of Swine and Setlists” (Blake Edwards! the hits just keep on coming!). In the end, as you can see, I gave up trying, feeling it was more important to just upload the danged thing.
00:24 – Greg has obviously blocked the end of Episode 38 from his mind.
00:40 – the reason those clinks don’t sound like our usual Landshark clinks is because Schmoe had served us Frugal Margaritas in tumblers
01:07 – I know it’s hard to believe, but that comment was truly unintentional
01:19 – the occasional thumps in the left speaker are the Schmoe’s and Mike’s kids playing basketball outside
03:45 – Buffett World’s write-ups of Charlotte and Jazz Fest
06:24 – Amazon’s Swine Not? listing
07:47 – that’s what we call foreshadowing
08:49 – and that’s what they call playing along
09:59 – seeing as I’m writing these notes a month later, I can now state that Jimmy’s appearance is actually on disc 7
10:17 – Amazon link for Sonny Landreth’s new From the Reach album
10:30 – the sample of “Howlin’ Moon” on iTunes … which, although iTunes Plus, costs 99¢ (by the way) and not $1.29
10:44 – Wikipedia says Dr John was born in 1940
10:51 – Jimmy’s “Late Show Web Exclusive” performance at CBS.com
13:15 – Scenes You Know By Heart at Mailboat Records
15:07 – can you make out the narration by our robot overlords? If not, it goes like this: “But first a word of explanation. It was at this time the recording was paused briefly while the boys watched the three interviews. During the Regis interview, Greg caught everyone by surprise when he blurted out that he wanted to sniff Kelly Ripa’s armpit, presumably because she was still wearing a workout outfit from a previous segment. This was such an unexpected and verging on downright creepy glimpse into Greg’s personal peccadilloes that the boys of course had to make mention of it for the rest of the night. And now, back to the podcast.”
19:05 – imagine Schmoe with fists in the air. Then imagine the effect this has on Greg.
20:00 – the Swine Not? listing at Barnes & Noble
22:52 – “Gardening at Night” off R.E.M.’s 1982 EP Chronic Town
23:33 – and now, Listener Ed’s setlist, as originally e-mailed to us way back on February 17

27:44 – Greg’s wife Cathy showed up during our mid-show break. She first appeared in our back-to-back Episode 52 and Episode 53 podcasts (coincidentally, the night Greg mentioned back at 00:24)
31:04 – during Mike’s recent vacation in Florida, he became enamored with the sounds of the Carnival Steel Drum Collection Jimmy Buffett tribute CDs. Here’s Amazon’s links to Volume 8 and Volume 11
32:07 – Henry Kapono.com
32:33 – everybody knows that’s a Seinfeld reference, right? Season 2? “The Chinese Restaurant”?

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 21 2008 (10:30 PM – 12:00 AM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub, Brownstown MI
“Here comes another podcast about Roger Clyne…and Mexico! They just can’t help themselves: Mike and Schmoe went to RCPM’s Circus Mexicus in Puerto Peñasco last weekend, and are full of stories. For those of you hungry for Buffett content, they at least made a stop at the new Margaritaville Café in Glendale AZ along the way. (Special appearances by DJ and Rachel.)”
A camera was present during the session, which allows us to present this little behind-the-scenes look at one of the episode’s highlights.
Since the Roger Clyne talk monopolized the episode, we’ve already recorded a more normal show which will be available in a couple days.
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, March 12 2008 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The preliminaries out of the way, we finally get down to reviewing the Live By the Bay concert video. And the wait was worth it since Mickey and Schmoe were not only joined by Mike (on phone) and Hud, but Scott and Greg managed to show up again too! (Cameo by Jennifer.)”
00:03 – Mike attended a work dinner, while in Houston, which he had feared might delay his participation on the panel
00:55 – obviously MIke did not get disconnected. I can only assume the wire from the phone to our speaker had a shot
01:03 – score by John Williams and Christopher Young
03:01 – Hud remained pretty fascinated by the contents of Scott’s MacBook. (The YouTube stuff he mentions was archived, since Zodiac still doesn’t have wi-fi.)
03:06 – Landshark Lager
03:33 – Buffett World tour dates
04:26 – “he’s playing Jul 17th in both Texas and Ohio”, Greg wrote, after perusing vividseats.com (the first place I saw the June 10 rumor)
05:00 – #3 on Top Live Events, via Buffett World
05:15 – tonight’s sponsor, Straight Guys Who Love Show Tunes
05:41 – news on Captain Tony, via Buffett News
06:15 – Amazon’s link to Sleepy Time Tunes Jimmy Buffett Lullabies. You’re probably not supposed to operate heavy machinery while listening to it, but the :30 samples available on iTunes might be safe enough. Having sampled the samples, I especially like how “CILCIA” is included. What better way to train your toddler to shout “Sonofabitches!” on cue. I do have to admit the album has a pleasing, easy-going feel (despite that monotonous sleigh bell); but ultimately the tracks all sound way too much like those self-loading MIDIs on your old mid-90s Geocities page.
06:56 – Margaritaville Salsa at Garden Fresh Gourmet
07:04 – Listener Josh wrote us on March 6
09:40 – that’s Greg’s U of M inspired ringtone, by the way
11:20 – Wikipedia describes the Miami Marine Stadium as “originally built for powerboat racing and utilized a floating stage in front of the grandstand that allowed additional concertgoers to listen from their boats in the water behind the stage.”
12:01 – the Barbizon modeling school
12:41 – a topical reference about some football coach who was guilty of pressing his naked self against windows, but I can’t find the news story any more
13:22 – first heard in Episode 13
14:26 – still need to find Westwood One info
20:24 – here’s a screen grab off my laserdisc:
25:56 – now compare this to what Scott said in Episode 56
28:21 – everybody knows the Fins to the Left part, everybody knows the Fins to the Right part. This is the third step…
28:45 – the “Last Mango” chorus is written on the men’s room wall at Capt Tony’s
30:24 – you know what? Screw it. The song sounds so good, here’s an MP3 download of it. It’s straight off my ancient bootleg CD, which somebody obviously recorded off the old radio concert LP.
31:06 – in 1981, according to Wikipedia, “Sailing” won Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Arrangement; the Christopher Cross album won Album of the Year; and Cross himself won Best New Artist
33:01 – another topical reference, to the mess Detroit mayor Kuame Kilpatrick got in texting saucy messages to his chief of staff, Christine Beatty
OK, ladies and gentlemen.
Our home team is out of the running, which means baseball is done for Detroit fans — or so you might think. Where can you now put all your baseball playoff energy? Look no further than the Arizona Diamondbacks. This is where we need to focus are energy. Not for the sake of baseball, but rather the good of Arizona’s own Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.
Roger wrote a little ditty to help support his hometown team, the Arizona Diamond backs. The farther they go the more I am sure we will hear his song, providing some much needed kudos for a very talented singer and songwriter. So watch the video and spread the word. This year, I back, you back, we back the D-backs. That’s a fact, Jack!!
Yes, I did go see Roger at the Magic Bag last night. It is the best live show you will ever attend!
Watch the video. Very good tune!!

For those in our area…
Happy New Year, everybody! Thanks for subscribing and thanks for making us the #1 Jimmy Buffett podcast in 2006.
The group met yesterday, and while eating chicken wings and watching U of M lose it was decided our next episode will be recorded January 10. This took so much out of us we never got around to discussing actual show content, however. That’s the day after Steve Jobs’s keynote at Macworld too, so be warned that Scott and I might wind up turning it into a big tech podcast.
In the meantime, even though the holiday parties might be over here is an important public service announcement, courtesy of Schmoe (and others).
