Episode 106B: Concert Concerto

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, July 15 2009 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“We finally get around to highlighting the last three June concerts.

Notes: Voice-over was recorded on a cheap USB headset in a very noisy room. Hopefully audio levels aren’t too bad; but considering all those clips, it was tough to keep the levels consistent. Music beds are usually from the song Jimmy is in the process of introducing. Song clips are quite often edited to fit in all the good bits in as short a time as possible.
According to my Midomi phone app, the version of “One Love” played on the PA is from Playing for Change [Amazon link]. Sally Taylor is the daughter of James Taylor, and I should’ve known that seeing as she has her own career as a singer/songwriter. I mixed up the “A Lot to Drink About” lyric: “Haven’t got a clue” is Jimmy’s new ad lib in “We are the Parents”. No wi-fi at Prime Time yet but we can still use our phones for research. And we can never stop teasing Greg over his old medley/melody confusion.
The little postscript is from the Bungie podcast [RSS link].

Club Trini Live (2000)

I uncovered this footage today and whipped up a new video to accompany the 1999 one. It’s not quite as polished as that one, mainly because I realized too late my camcorder was losing battery power — which explains the choppiness before the video ends.
Nevertheless, here’s a look at Pine Knob Tailgating 2000.

Episode 106A: Boat Thinks

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, July 15 2009 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“Inspired by a recent Detroit Free Press article, the boys consider Buffetty boat names.
(Guest starring AC/DC, Aerosmit, Bob Marley, and Bob Seger.)

    02:28Lance Armstrong’s tweet about Buffett
    02:37Buffett interview video
    04:24Magaritaville in Calgary
05:27 – “How the Miami Dolphins Landed a Shark”, South Florida Business Journal
08:23 – to illustrate what we’re talking about, I whipped up this quick little Riverbend road trip video:

    10:33Will Kimbrough’s blog entry
13:23 – “Naming a Boat is Serious Business”, Detroit Free Press
15:13the listener photo I was trying to find

Episode 105: Fore-Skins on Tour

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, July 8 2009 (9:30 PM – 11:00 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“Fresh from visiting Key West Coffee & Cafe, the boys return to an old favorite haunt. Includes a look at the two Camden shows, ‘This Week in Buffett’, and Mike using ‘decor’ and ‘ambience’ in a sentence. (Special guests: Larry and Rachel. Cameos by Jacob and Nathan.)

Don’t be put off by the show title. Fore-Skins is the name of our golf league.
00:00 – the sponsorship announcement comes from the 7/10 “NPR: Most E-Mailed Stories” podcast
02:02 – the new and improved Key West Coffee & Café site
04:01 – not sure where I saw the first set of reviews now, but here are several for your perusal
09:41 – way back in high school I helped Mike write a poem. I now can only recall the opening verse:

Insects
always make terrible pets
If you take them for walks
they’ll go for your necks.

You can’t put them in cages,
they’ll go through the bars
and get themselves smashed
on the windshields of cars.

    11:16 – …but we’ll link to Cutter Advanced anyway
    13:25 – well, here’s a web ad for Landshark:

…but I still haven’t seen a poster or a TV commercial.
14:54Google street view for Key West Coffee & Cafe
16:15 – the Shark Invitational is our own little mini-Olympics wherein Larry tries to endanger and maim us every year. Here’s an old Shark Invitational video from 2006
16:32 – a reference to Guys’ Shopping Night, December 2000, where I got completely wasted at Ruby Tuesday’s, was found passed out in a bathroom stall, and had to be deposited at Larry’s house for the night. Admittedly, I had had a lot to drink, but since it was all beer it seemed incongruous I would become that comatose. I later discovered that it was actually a reaction to sesame seeds — in particular, while rotating through the South Beach diet meal plan, the sesame chicken dinner, which includes a double dose of sesame seeds and sesame oil. All of this was cut out of the recording since it was so tangential, but I include it here for the sake of transparency
16:45 – some more stuff from the archives. Here are my two photos from the big cheeseburger eating contest…

17:51Buffett World post on the London show
    18:24Radio Margaritaville’s Summerzcool Contest
    18:43Buffett News’s write-up on the ESPN doc
20:51 – it might sound like we’re repeating the drunk chick’s love call, but each one is different — and there was more where that came from. Those are just the screams from between songs.
23:48 – Summer 2009 started at 1:45 AM (Eastern) that night (June 21)
    26:36Boston Globe interview
    26:41Buffett News’s Men’s Journal scans
27:08 – the clip comes from the 7/01 Daily Show, during an interview with TIME columnist and author of The Myth of the Rational Market, Justin Fox.
28:01 – from MacBreak Weekly #143. Voices are Alex Lindsey, Scott Bourne, Andy Ihnatko, and Leo Laporte. Lost in the editing is that Alex Lindsey is discarding pants because he’s losing weight. (…And what the heck, here’s a Boone’s Farm link.)
29:44here’s a link to the SModcast podcast but I’ve listened to far too many of them too quickly to identify the particular episode I’m talking about. Besides, I’ve heard “Cheeseburger” and “WDWGDAS” since then too.
30:16 – Larry was about to bring up Roger Clyne

Club Trini Live (1999)

I know I should be finishing Episode 105, but instead I’ve dug into the archives to reassemble a new edit of Club Trini performing in the Pine Knob parking lot, June 8 1999. The edits might be a little abrupt, but this is pretty much everything I shot that day.

Cheeseburger in Caseville 2009

During tonight’s visit to Key West Coffee & Café (as discussed in Episode 104), we got to wondering whether we should try going back to the Cheeseburger Festival in Caseville MI. It runs this year from August 7 to August 16, which means it’s possible we could go there immediately following our Pine Knob concert and make it one helluva Buffetty weekend!
Once we saw the new logo for this year’s festival, their 11th annual, we knew we had to go.
    …For Greg’s sake…

00:20 – the prolonged giggling is because I came very close to doing a spit-take right here
00:27Key West Coffee & Café’s not exactly up-to-date website and a photo from our eventual visit on July 1.

02:43 – apparently this is the theme music for Facebook’s Farm Club from Scott’s MacBook (and, 02:58: that’s a tiny snippet of “Rock Me Amadeus”, requested by Jennifer, avoided by me).
    03:53Tiki Bar TV

19:24 – Scott is possibly confusing this 1999 “Beach House” tour with 1994’s “Fruitcakes on Tour”, seeing as “Fruitcakes” was not the show opener in 1999
38:38 – this was printed on the LP’s inner sleeve
45:35 – and that was entirely improv’d, too!

Guinea Pigging

The Boston Globe interviewed Jimmy, in advance of his two Mansfield shows (Thursday and Saturday). The interview is available at Boston.com, and midway through he mentions us northcoasters.

Q. How has the recession affected your tour? Is this the year the bubble bursts and some people will not come to see you?

A. No, we’re doing great. Thank God there are people out there who like what we’re doing. They haven’t put us on a list of things they’re not going to do because of the economy. This is their vacation and they’re not going to give it up. They may not go to Florida or buy a new car, but they won’t miss our show. I wanted to find out right away, so we went on sale early with a Detroit show — they’ve been as hard hit as anywhere — and it sold out in 20 minutes. I’m very grateful.

Happy to be your test kitchen, Jimmy.
