I got the new U2 CD Best Of 1990-2000 yesterday. I already have all the albums and B-sides, so I mainly got this to fill out my collection. At least it has some new mixes and two new songs. And, after listening to it, I was rather disappointed.For one thing, I prefer their earlier stuff. I know these songs are probably more popular, but to me their earlier stuff is more pure. Just bass, drums, and guitar — the primary colors of rock, as Bono used to say. The remixes don’t add to the enjoyment either. Only one is an improvement (Gone). The others are just the same thing with a different flavor. Also, a better mix of the new song was available online…not on this album.
I’m not even thrilled with the song selection. An unworthy song like “The First Time” not only ends the collection but has already been on another collection. And adding to the insult, the UK disc has a bonus track while the US one does not.
In short, I could’ve made a better Best Of with my CD burner.
