Perusing the News

    • The stock exchange sure enjoys the war coverage. It seems investors like to make a killing as they watch the killing. This has raised concerns about how the economy will fare following the war’s outcome, but the NYSE reportedly already has a plan in motion. In lieu of ringing a bell to start trading on the floor, they will instead shoot a homeless person. The Bush Administration has already been in contact with NYSE Chairman Dick Grasso to discuss the possibility of including Texas death row prisoners in the arrangement, thereby eliminating the proverbial two birds with one stone.
    • For a while I was concerned at the small turnout for the Coalition of the Willing (a name that sounds a bit too much like some Leni Riefenstahl film, by the way). There don’t seem to be many major players, and some of the countries have already started dropping out. But then I realized it really shouldn’t matter anyway. I totally forgot that we have an Army of One to begin with.
    • In entertainment news, the reality TV boom does not seem to be abating, as two more shows are poised to premiere in the near future. First is Form Factor on NBC, where contestants are forced to sit in uncomfortable chairs, use bulky PDAs, and operate cell phones having awkward button placement. CBS’s offering is Survivor: Survivor where a television staff is forced to produce the same show over and over until the last viewer changes the channel.
    • Over on the comics page, I couldn’t resist stealing this political cartoon, drawn by Gary Brookins, from the Richmond Times-Dispatch
