Today in Food (2004/06/15)

It would be hard for me to care less about this news story, but it mentions food so I feel compelled to reference it here. The Agriculture Department has decreed that batter-coated frozen French fries are a fresh vegetable. This may prove one of two things: the Bush administration really likes to pick on French fries, or they are so desperate to align themselves with memories of Ronald Reagan they’re willing to relive that whole “ketchup is a vegetable” fiasco.
As if to distance themselves from the latter, the department is quick to point out the ruling is only for commerce and does not reflect the nutritional value of battered-coated French fries. Same as calling an SUV a car does not change its nutritional value either.
