While watching an old CommandN podcast I learned about a piece of donation-ware called Disk Inventory X, a disk usage utility which can display one’s hard drive’s contents as a “treemap”. It looked cool and I had to try it out. Think of the following as an Olan Mills portrait of the birthday boy.(Actually it’s probably more like an X-ray or MRI, but we won’t tell him that.)

The green and red squares at the top left are my big honking iTunes library. The yellow and purple patches next to it are more music files. The blue blocks on bottom left are video captures of the vacation DVD I’m working on. The bronze bar next to it is my Virtual PC drive. The green block on top right is a lot of LiveType files, a Final Cut related program I haven’t even worked with yet. The purple stuff below it is from Soundtrack, which I have at least used (the dark blue stuff below is an additional Symphony Orchestra pack).
