Picture of the Week

I’ve been enjoying this picture so much this week that I feel I should just copy it from Tumblr and post it here. It really is a delightful and heartwarming image of Spring…

From Tumblr via Reddit
Update: I discovered the image comes from a site called The Big Caption.

Steve Jobs is a Stupid Dumbass Idiot

For quite a while I’ve been patiently waiting for Apple to support Blu-ray drives or allow Blu-ray playback in their Mac line. I’ve heard how licensing Blu-ray is a “bag of hurt” but assumed all those problems would be worked out in time. Today, I see someone emailed Steve Jobs about this very topic, and Jobs shot back this short, simple, taunt of a response.

From 9 to 5 Mac.com

I cannot fully illustrate how fucking infuriated this makes me.  Jobs’s alternative to Blu-ray is YouTube?!  For one thing, Flash on YouTube performs like shit on a Mac.  For another thing, YouTube might say it is 1080p, but it is compressed so much that the video quality is a laughably poor substitute for 1080p from a Blu-ray disc.  In short, saying YouTube is similar to Blu-ray is like like saying a sheet of paper is a replacement for an iPad.
    That dog don’t hunt.
Over the last few years, I’ve bought a Power Mac, a Mac Pro, a PowerBook, a MacBook Pro, a couple iPhones, and numerous iPods.  I’ve talked family members into getting iMacs and Macbooks.  I’ve spent a lot of money on this company.  But I have gotten tired of waiting for them to upgrade their optical drives — or even to allow Blu-ray playback from some third-party vendor’s external drive.  Windows laptops and desktops have had this capability for a couple years now, but it seems Apple can’t handle it, or, more likely, doesn’t give a shit.  This has become readily apparent now, direct from the head of the company, in the form of a stupid, thoughtless, tossed-off comment.  Well…two can play at that game: Fuck you, Steve Jobs — my next computer will be running Windows.

Bitter Balloons

Archivist’s Note: At this point, and through April 10, the blog began to mirror the rants which were also on the Bitter Old Man sister site. At the time, BOM used comic book thought or speech balloons on a yellow background. Rather then pepper these among the other entries, and because not all the rants were mirrored, the entire collection is included below…

Silent Clock

My God — it’s actual text!
Yes, it’s been a while since I’ve actually blogged on my weblog, but I had to say something now as the news has been confirmed.  Plus, there’s the fact Facebook said this paragraph was too many characters.
It was confirmed today (Friday) that 24 has been canceled.  Fox claims it’s too expensive to continue.  Having a website devoted to TV and movies, this is big news.  However…
I hate to say it but I’m not feeling too broken up about 24 saying bye-bye.  Love the show and Keifer is excellent, but the stories have become increasingly implausible, the dangers have become redundant, and the time-wasting subplots all too frequently spoil any momentum.  I’m content to give the series a proper send-off and just re-watch the earlier seasons.  Back when there was only one President Palmer.
Farewell Jack Bauer.  Get yourself some rest and thanks for being such a hero.
    … (Silent clock) …

WSU Match Day

From WDIV. Supposedly, my nephew Joe is somewhere in this video…
Update: okay, supposedly, Joe shows up at the 00:27 mark, in tan slacks and a gray sweater, with his back to us. He also got an award for outstanding performance in the field of internal medicine.

Meryl Streep in The Pottymouth

I seem to like these clips, where a bit of profanity slips by the network censors. I guess it illustrates how harmless it is when they actually hit the airways, how pointless it is to try and camouflage them. Also, it’s funny to hear the E! censor try to bleep the word and fail so badly.
    Here’s the video, from E!’s Golden Globes post-show coverage…

2009-09-12: U2 in Chicago

We left for Chicago yesterday morning and returned this afternoon, for another pilgrimage to see U2. It was a great show as always, but I’m still of a mind that their best tours are the stripped down ones, like the Elevation tour, rather than this current one — which, like Pop Mart, threatens to dwarf or diminish the band with its huge, distracting, yet admittedly impressive stage.
My photos are available here [originally at dot-Mac gallery, then dot-Me gallery, and since moved to an album on Flickr and here’s a collection of clips off my Cyber-shot camera.
Note: (Originally uploaded September 13 but revised, re-edited, and re-uploaded September 15.)

Obama Responds to His Republican Critics

In the wake of last night’s address to a joint session of congress, President Obama had this to say to the critics of his health care proposals:
