Rather than wait around for the reportedly imminent release of Windows XP SP2, I’ve chosen to do my own upgrade. I was quite serious when I said I was getting a liquid-cooled dual 2.5 G5, and it arrived this morning.
Things are looking much better. Not only has the G5 finally made it American shores, it’s now only a couple dozen miles away!
This year marks the 75th birthday of Dearborn MI and the 25th anniversary of the city’s Homecoming festival. Plus it was another chance to eat shish tawook, watch my friends’ kids on carnival rides, and drink beer in a field. Remakably, there was no bocce this year. The celebration was almost tainted by controversy, due to problems with one of the headliner’s, Charlie Daniels’, songs, but it was not in evidence on the night itself. In fact, the video, below, contains not only the always impressive fireworks finale but Charlie Daniels’ famed concert encore. (QuickTime video. 5½ minutes. 12 MBs.) I am going stir crazy!

You may have heard about the controversial new commercial, the one where a group of veterans hope to express the truth behind the presidential candidate’s military service. There’s uncertainty whether it will air, so here is the audio from that commercial (courtesy of The Randi Rhodes Show). My G5 is still in China apparently, but Poeben, of the long-lived Mac Rumors thread, got his this morning and has also put photos up of its arrival. I like his since they make the G5 look so nice and shiny. Videogame_junky, another of today’s lucky recipients, offers his own G5 photos too. Hotwire132002, of the Mac Rumors “G5s are Shipping” thread, has received his G5 this morning. As far as I know, it might be the first dual 2.5 G5 in North America (or at least the first one in Michigan). And he has already posted his photos of its arrival. I got the e-mail this morning at 9:01:47 that my G5 has shipped! We’re all still ravenously following the progress of our G5s, over at the Mac Rumors thread. The thread has surpassed forty pages and a thousand posts. Evidently the first batch of five hundred G5s was shipped over the weekend from Shenzhen, China. as I type this (1:00 pm Central) the plane has been in-flight 5.5 hrs.
The plain is scheduled to land in Memphis about 4:00 PM today.
Here is some other info from his experience.
-Daily international routes are more frequently changed and canceled if the plane is not full enough.
-Packages are generally scanned as they are unloaded, but pallets of packages from the same shipper my be scanned when separated.
-The accuracy of there real time tracking info is considered the best.
-There are some daytime flights, but the vast majority are at night, the main package sort is afternoon for that nights flights.
