Sweet Jesus, When Will It End?

To call this moron a moron is to insult morons.

“This Place is a Zoo!”

This could possibly be the only TV commercial I’ve ever liked. Coincidentally, we were just talking about it while driving by the Detroit Zoo a couple weeks ago. Thanks to Schmoe for sharing the link — and to the uploader for bringing back the memories.

Rabbit Stew

I know it’s childish, but I get a kick out of when a bit of profanity slips onto the networks. I had a field day listening to the missed bleeps in Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars, but here’s an excerpt from tonight’s Late Show with David Letterman:
(He’s teasing a lady in the audience who had asked him to repeat the previous night’s Top Ten list.)

Maestro Williams in Town

I am very upset to find out today that famed film composer John Williams was in Detroit on Friday to conduct the DSO. I can’t believe such an icon was in town and I knew nothing about it. I’ve been belatedly reading up on the visit at JW Fan.net message boards. I was very tempted to steal the photos and video clips and post them here. But instead, I’ll just point the way to the best posting so far.

Burn a Disc, Save a Life

I’ve been seeing this headline on the AP wire the last couple days: “DVD in Firefighter’s Coat Blocks Bullet“.
Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy says he was leaving a Waffle House restaurant in Walterboro [South Carolina] on Saturday morning when two men ran in fighting over a gun. Police say a bullet hit one of the struggling men, shattered a window and then hit McRoy.
The bullet hit a DVD McRoy was carrying in his pocket. He suffered a bruise but didn’t realize he had been shot. As he told a police officer what happened he noticed a bullet hole in his jacket, the shattered DVD case and a piece of the bullet.
One detail I was quick to notice was in the final sentence of the article. The DVD “was a gift from an employee who had recorded a TV show about fire extinguishers.” See that, MPAA? If that DVD had not been illegally copied, a man could be dead!

The Stomach Will Not Be Fooled!

    An interesting article at TIME.com:
[N]ew research suggests that the body is not so easily fooled, and that sugar substitutes are no key to weight loss — perhaps helping to explain why, despite a plethora of low-calorie food and drink, Americans are heavier than ever.
I’ve seen similar stories linking artificial sweeteners to weight gain; but what struck me about this article is that it involves testing animals. It would be easy to explain why people who use artificial sweeteners can still gain weight — they could simply be rationalize they can eat more (I know I’ve often done it) — but if tests on animals produce the same results, it suggests the problem is physical more than mental. And this intrigues me a great deal.

Arrested Development Development?!

Holy crap! It’s even being confirmed! It looks like there’s a possibility of a Bluth family reunion.
First Serenity and now this. It’s as if the movie studios are joining together to clean up the messes made by Fox’s stupid decisions.

Lord of the Wrongs

Yay!  Lord of the Rings bloopers! I hope there’s more where these came from.
[Archivist’s Note: the original video has been removed, but perhaps this one will suffice…]

Headline of the Week

I include a screen grab here, just in case the article gets changed.

Really!  You don’t say!
And I’d always been told a cop couldn’t find that with two hands and a flashlight.

But He’s Called Big Brother

Some fat-haters in Mississippi want to see you starve. Raw Story has the unbelievable report that “[a] bill recently introduced in Mississippi’s state legislature would bar restaurants from serving people determined to be obese.”
The state’s health department can even revoke permits of establishments that do not comply. No word on how the determination of “obesity” would be made. No word on if food establishments have to provide their own scales or have to perform BMI tests on potential customers. No word on how any McDonald’s will stay open. And no word on how punishing people who actually go out to restaurants is going to fix anything.
You might even file this as another sign of the great American police state we’re turning into, except no one has been wantonly tasered or forcibly strip searched … yet.
