Worthwhile or not?
He actually wants to take credit for it.
(Actually, it’s in the Free Press.) Howard Stern is taking action against the people behind Am I Hot?, claiming they stole his idea. Either he wants to sue everybody or the Freep gets confused by capital letters.

Grand Moff Dubya

I feel horrible. I’m actually sitting here waiting for a war to start.
Not because I back it (although I am not totally against putting increased pressure on Hussein to make good on his twelve-year-old agreements), but just because it will get it over with quicker and we can all shutup about it.
This is so cold and heartless that I appall even myself.
Anyway, speaking of made-up wars to be shown on television, world opinion is not quite so divided in regards to another evil despot…

Even France agrees.
As a true-blue nerd, you’d think I’d support such a cause, but then again there’s no way we will ever get the original Star Wars on DVD, merely because the original does not have Lucas’s precious “Episode IV” tag on it. (That didn’t show up till the premiere on pay cable, after Empire was released.) And if TCFHE just remasters the letterboxed laserdisc video master, it will be drab, over-bright, grainy, and will also be missing two lines of dialogue.
So be careful what you wish for, ladies and gentlemen, you just might get it. Just ask the Supreme Court.

Sound Off

Guess what, Osama Bin Laden’s niece Waffa Bin Laden wants to be a pop star. The BBC reports the London resident, 26, has been recording demos and hopes to sign a contract soon — although, admittedly, she “is worried her surname might be off-putting to some”. Her album, tentatively titled Death to America, will be released on cassette, one song at a time every six or seven months.
At this time, President Bush has not yet declared war on her.

Catch Catch-All

Stuff I learned while reading Catch.com:
  • The smell of male sweat makes women relaxed, according to this Reuters story, and has a “beneficial effect on women’s moods”. So if any women want to feel really relaxed, they should follow me in half an hour as I make my way up the stairwell to my car.
  • Technology confuses CNN. Several major Internet sites have been having fun with the CNN: Technology headline “File-sharing sites allow trading of porn”. Well, yes; obviously. I know, I was tempted to make fun of that headline too; but the story is really how utilities like Net Nanny do not work with P2P services. So although parents might think they are protecting their children from “Goatse.cx”, such adult material is still easily accessible. Too bad this message was lost through a clumsy headline.
  • It’s a shame when some record producer is more rational and sensible than our elected officials. Brian Eno has some interesting food for thought in this self-penned column.
  • God bless Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks. (Here’s a review of the concert that started it all.)

The Return of the Giant Cheeto!

From ZWire!
With the sanctity of our precious French fry being assailed, it’s good to see people rally behind another fried snack food. The Giant Cheeto is in the news again, having reached its permanent destination in Iowa. The SFG site salutes the citizens of Algona, joins in celebrating March 13 as “Giant Cheeto Day”, and wishes them the best as they unveil the Giant Cheeto tonight at Sister Sarah’s Restaurant. It is indeed fitting that tribute and obeisance be paid, in honor and laud, to the Giant Cheeto. (But that’s another story.)
In the spirit of a Cheetoan blessing, may your fingers be ever orange!
By the way, see the image that accompanies this entry? Note that grey box in the middle? That familiar gray background and Verdana text is none other than this very site! I’ve been Photoshopped! ZWire! used a screen grab of my Giant Cheeto entry as part of their story on press coverage. And, since they used a screen grab of my page, it seems only fitting I continue the cycle by taking a screen grab of theirs!

Image of the Day

Michigan: The Great Lakes State
I saw this image at Chris Ruzin.net and had to share it.
It’s my home state, looking cold and frosty.
Three of the five Great Lakes have frozen, which has not occurred in about ten years.
You might be able to spot me (bottom, center) but I believe I was in my car when this photo was taken.

Society for the Preservation of French Fries

FROM MY COLD DEAD HAND!
(Image from AirMasterOven.com)
The more I think about it, the angrier I get. It is reprehensible that our lawmakers, on the eve of war, amid the downward spiral of our economy, have wasted time and resources trying to change “French fries” to “freedom fries”. If it is retribution against France’s reluctance to risk human life, it is hollow. If it is simply a light-hearted joke, it is feeble. What’s worse, the yahoos in Washington DC are messing around with a precious staple in my diet!
    Shame on them.
    — And leave my fries alone!
(And while I have your attention, Congress… In case you forgot, you people are governors of the nation. Grow the hell up!)
Please join me in supporting the French fry. Below, are some links where you can learn more about our noble golden friend.

Stuff I Learned in the War

  • In response to our Congress’s childish decision to call French fries “”Freedom Fries”, the French have countered by referring to American cheese as “fromage des dumbasses”.*
  • Whenever footage is shown of Arabs demonstrating in the streets, they are invariably saying “Shouting shouting, we are shouting in a crowd. Shouting shouting, we are hopping as we shout.”
  • NBC is upset that all the best names have been taken for war coverage. CNN is using “Showdown: Iraq”, CBS is using “Countdown: Iraq”. ABC has “Stare Down: Iraq”. So NBC is stuck choosing between “Touchdown: Iraq”, “Falling Down: Iraq”, “Eiderdown: Iraq”, “System of a Down: Iraq”, or “Watership Down: Iraq”.
  • President Bush is one vote away from being able to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Dick Cheney has been working madly to secure the 50th [vote],” reads an internal memo. If permissions are not won, the administration plans to declare war there next year.
    * I doubt this is true since I can’t imagine the French bothering with American cheese in the first place.

“No no, quite wrong. Open the gates!”

Terry Gilliam, Director of Movies
My Malata PAL/NTSC converter came in handy again, since I was able to watch the Lost in La Mancha documentary last night. It only opened around here a couple weeks ago, but the UK DVD is already available since the movie premiered last year overseas. The documentary follows director Terry Gilliam’s failed efforts to mount a production of Don Quixote. Those efforts were subverted by the forces of Man, Nature, and, we can’t forget, Darkness, and resulted in a documentary that is more like an “Un-making of” featurette. Or a DVD supplement without the Disc One.
It’s heartbreaking to see how close we got to having another Terry Gilliam movie come to the silver screen. It’s been five years since his last movie and we have been waiting to find out what his next project would be. Now the years of preproduction have come to nothing, and Gilliam has to decide whether to try and reassemble funding for Don Quixote or move on to something new. As a huge Gilliam fan, I can’t help but wonder why he has so much trouble getting his movies off the ground… He’s one of our most original and visionary directors, so one would think Hollywood would be eager to force-feed him movie scripts just to see what wonders he could conjure up.
As Moriarity said in his perfect review of Lost in La Mancha: “Why God? Why does Freddie Prinze Jr.’s bankroll keep expanding? […] Why will you let studios spend billions of dollars on mediocre […] movies and ignore your faithful servant, Terry Gilliam, who has done nothing but push the boundaries of filmmaking?” Why indeed.
It can’t be because of Time Bandits. It was well received by critics and especially by children, and made back many times its small budget. It can’t be Brazil. Although its post-production resulted in stormy arguments between director and the studio heads at MCA/Universal, the movie won great critical acclaim and is still highly regarded. And the movie is also scarily prescient, since we are ourselves living in Brazil-like world where civil liberties are trampled in the name of dealing with a terrorist situation that may not even exit. (As well as, let us not forget, a world where computer screens become so tiny, giant magnfiying glasses are needed to read them.)
It can’t be Fisher King or Twelve Monkeys since those were successful films that not only garnered Academy Award nominations but were also made within the “studio system”. So it must be Baron Munchausen, poor unfortunate Baron Munchausen. The punching bag in every discussion of Gilliam’s career. Even the makers of Lost in La Mancha takes cheap shots at this sadly underappreciated gem.
Yes, the movie was a so-called “bomb” at the box office. But there’s one small point everyone seems to overlook. Munchausen is a great movie. Where else can we see the glorious visuals of a flight to the Moon in a hot air balloon, a spat between Gods and Goddesses, a ride on a cannonball (and a mortar shell), a waltz among the clouds, the strongest man, the fastest man, a colorful rascal who literally defies Death, and, let us not forget, Uma Thurman naked. And all this was filmed and completed for forty million bucks. That’s a pittance. Seriously. Forty million bucks is now Schwarzenegger’s salary, but Gilliam was able to make an entire fantastical and brilliant movie for that!
So what if the movie only made a fraction of its budget. And this is not Gilliam’s fault. He came through on his end of the bargain, so the fact the movie lost money is entirely the blame of Columbia/Tri-Star, who completely abandoned the movie when it was released. Around here it only played in one measly theater. I had to drive an hour to see it on the big screen! But I did it, and it was more than worth it. I bought a laserdisc player just so I could watch The Criterion Collection’s excellent release of Munchausen (and why is this not on DVD?!). I love Munchausen and it pains me that people keep dismissing it as a failure — simply because the marketing department didn’t know what gold they had on their hands. (And, of course, the fact new studio boss Dawn Steel was not interested in bothering with something old studio boss David Puttnam had green-lighted.) So, leave off picking on Munchausen (rent it instead…if you can find it) and please please please someone make sure Terry Gilliam gets lots of money so he can make many more movies.
