Here’s a fun little tidbit I found in the news. Our government is not only selling us down the river, they’re selling our toll roads and bridges to foreign companies.Few people know that the tolls from the U.S. side of the tunnel between Detroit and Windsor, Canada, go to a subsidiary of an Australian company — which also owns a bridge in Alabama.My parents complain about buying foreign cars. Wait till they find out they’re driving on foreign roads!
Owing to the high cost of maintaining a webspace on this series of tubes known as the Internets (what with all the movie downloads and e-mails getting all tangled up together), it has become necessary to start selling advertising space. Hopefully these will not become too intrusive as to encroach upon your viewing pleasure. Yesterday, right before I left for work, I caught a news story about an old man who’d accidentally crashed his car into someone’s porch. It had happened in Dearborn and I waited to find out on what street it had taken place. Two of the guys I podcast with live in Dearborn and I was wondering if this might have occurred near them. No one in the house was hurt, since the residents were on vacation. The old man however is in serious condition. The reporter never did give a street name.Greg is on vacation. Houghton Lake or wherever he goes. He calls me at 12:30pm yesterday on my cell. He had just found out that, within the hour, his 92-year-old neighbor across the street came out of his driveway and rammed into Greg’s porch and garage at 55 miles per hour! He’s lucky nobody was home. I guess the fire department had to demolish Greg’s property more to get this guy out. He was at the hospital and there were questions he would live. Greg asked me to check it all out, although he had been in touch with a well-informed neighbor anyway.Never did I expect that the poor sap who’d had his house driven into would be someone I know! And you might know him too, in a way, since Greg has been a frequent contributor to our Wasting Away on the North Coast podcast, right here at Wastin’ Away.net — and whence this blog entry originated, by the way. He can be heard in episodes 2, 3, 6, and 7.
I jogged over there. The porch is screwed up – some cement is crumbled and his landscaping stones/bricks are messed up. Some glass is still there and a bunch of oil-dry. The garage door is gone. Completely. They have put this ply-wood up (the city does this I guess) with hinges so barely — and I mean BARELY — a car may be able to fit through perfectly. I know he has a car in there. It is all locked up and a key is either being sent to him or is with the neighbor.
Crazy. Fox 2 was supposedly there. I recorded most of the early Fox 2 News for him. This is really why Greg contacted me. To record his house on TV.
The tradition continues.

Monkeys fed a diet rich in trans-fats — commonly found in fast foods — grew bigger bellies than those fed a diet rich in unsaturated fats, but containing the same overall number of calories. They also developed signs of insulin resistance, which is an early indicator of diabetes.
Trans-fats, or partially hydrogenated oils, are found in many fast foods and also in baked goods and processed snacks. They dramatically increase the risk of heart disease — even more than saturated fats found in animal products.
According to the Des Moines Register:[City Engineer Jeb] Brewer swears that consultants who work for the city did not design the $5.7 million detention basin to resemble anything, but recent e-mails to City Hall from area residents seem to have found “art” in the not-so-subtle phallic design.Former attorney Barry Zuckercorn sees it differently and is planning a lawsuit against the city for mental duress and false advertising.
Did you ever notice whenever someone eats in a movie you can hear the fork scrape against their teeth? I know this is a fairly specific rant in the grand scheme of movie watching, but it really annoys me. The sound of it annoys me and the mere idea of scraping a fork between my teeth annoys me. In all my years of eating, and believe me we’re talking a lot of meals here, I think maybe once (oh let’s give it the benefit of a doubt and say “twice”) I’ve actually bitten down on my fork. But what is it with today’s foley artists? By the standards of today’s movie soundtracks, you’d think fork-chewing is a standard practice. Fuck yeah! The fuckers at the Parents Television Council got the House of Representatives to fucking agree to raise the FCC’s fines on fucking television indecency — and they fucking raised those fines tenfold! Holy fuck! Can you fucking believe it? It will now cost TV stations up to $325,000 if some dumb fuck blurts out the F-word. Un-fucking-believable. Congratulations to all you fuckers for saving us from that fucking bad language!
