Turtle Recall

I hadn’t heard about this story till today, when I saw it on Headline News during lunch. I was able to record it a couple hours later, no thanks to Comcast Newsmakers. (Does anybody even watch that?)
At last, here’s something family-friendly from this site: the heartwarming tale of Owen and Mzee…
More photos and even a downloadable PDF book here.
P.S.: switched from FLV to QuickTime on January 18. Also matted the video to cover up HDLN’s ticker crawl.

The Crawdads of August

As I say in my intro, I wanted to add some more content to my podcast feed but there’s really not that much going on. This leads me to delve into my videotape archive and look for anything of interest. Hopefully this endeavor it will be worthwhile…and hopefully it will not devolve into me just sharing home movies. My first selection is something I shot in August 1998 at the Dearborn Homecoming (prior to the fireworks footage which is available elsewhere in the feed).
An iPod-compatible version is available at my iTMS feed.
Another attempt at FLV, so I can watch this at work. You might notice the audio is not synched. It’s fine on my original QuickTime, which makes this another strike against Flash video.
Also, I just discovered the HTML code I was using did not work with Firefox. This has since been corrected, and I apologize for the inconvenience.
P.S.: Switched to beautiful 480×360 Quicktime, Monday night, January 9.

Wild & Wacky (2005)

I forgot I recorded this Wednesday night. It’s Marv Albert’s appearance on Late Show with David Letterman where he exhbits the wild and the wacky in the world of sports. This time he’s got the highlights from 2005.

Meet the New OS

Jeez, Apple wasn’t kidding, were they, when they introduced Mac OS X Tiger at WWDC a year and a half ago:
Bill Gates, last night at CES, talked about some new features in the upcoming Vista OS, planned for release at the end of this year or the beginning of 2007. Interestingly, rather than run a demo, slides of the desktop were displayed. He lauded such new developments as integrated search (or what Mac users already call Spotlight), a music store called Urge (or what Mac users already call iTunes), a Photo Gallery (or what Mac users already call iPhoto). It’s been said many times before that Windows is just an imitation of the Mac OS (ten years behind), but now this seems even more blatant. Though this might be only because I’m now seeing this from the Mac side.
You can either a wait another year for these cutting edge features, or you could already have been using them for a year in Tiger. Rather sad that Gates can do nothing but play catch-up with Apple. This excerpt from a Vista demo gets the point across even more.

FLV Test

This is a test to see if I can play Flash video. I’m interested in this because I can’t watch WMV or QuickTime files at work, but Flash video can get through. However, I’m not too thrilled by the results of these experiments. For instance, the Fishcast video below has been compressed to a small iPoddish 320×240 window but still tallies up to an overly healthy 33.7 MBs. Meanwhile, the original QuickTime version has a bigger 480×360 window yet still has a much smaller file size of 12.2 MBs.
Regardless, here’s the Fish in Flash (…before he got flushed).
[Archivist’s Note: the results of the test were not very satisfying and the video player has since been removed.]
Thanks to Jeroen Wiljering for the Flash video tutorial.

’Tis the Sausage

It’s said no one should know how sausages are made. Well, too bad! One of my favorite Christmas traditions is traveling to my Uncle Jack and Aunt Clare’s house where we make the Italian sausage we have on Christmas breakfast. I’m not sure how to spell the name — salameats? salametes? — but here’s my video on how to make them…

The Players
Grinder / Packer / Fryer:   Jake
Sausage Maker:   Rick
Keeper of the Recipe:   Uncle Jack
Cousin in-law / Designated Grinder:   John
Occasional Voice:   Me
TV Voice:   Rachael Ray
Mom:   Debby
Grandma:   Jo
Brothers:   Joe & John
Oscar:   Himself

Around the Net

According to this article, you might want to reconsider giving out your phone number at the checkout.
    • Slate has found the worst song ever. I’ve got news for you: aallll rap is shite.
    • The Republicans have saved Christmas! Poor, undefended, hanging-by-a-thread Christmas was in such dire jeopardy. People were actually referring to it as a “holiday”, the bastards. At last, the true meaning of divisiveness and intolerance can shine forth.

The Fish is Dead

Seeing as how I blogged about this a while ago, I figured I’d submit this follow-up. Below, in video form, is a tribute to the long hard final days of Fish VI.
