Happy Birthday

Can’t let the day pass without noting it’s been one year since I ditched Windows and switched to Mac. Coincidentally, two days ago, I broke my G5’s uptime record. Previously it was 16 days of continual uninterrupted use. Sure, there are some who claim months of uptime, but they count the time their computer has been powered on; I count it from last reboot…mainly because that’s how my uptime widget counts it. On Saturday my G5 attained its personal best of 24½ days (and I only stopped the count because I needed to reboot after installing an update for Little Snitch).
Happy Birthday Zaphod! (That being the name of my dual-processor Power Mac.) Here’s to many more!
For old times’ sake, here’s a look at the history of Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Mrs Sheehan Goes to Crawford

Half a month ago I quoted Cindy Sheehan, a grieving mother who spoke at a congressional meeting about the death of her son.  Now Ms Sheehan is in the news again, marching on the Western White House in Crawford to demand a meeting with President Bush.  Poor guy, he flees the hot summer his energy policies have created only to have his work follow him home.  He declined to visit with Sheehan but, undaunted, she is refusing to leave, camping out on the side of the road five miles from Bush’s ranch.
Her stand has captured the national attention over the weekend.  Fellow war protestors traveled with her, and other military moms have driven down to join her.  Two White House aides were sent out to speak with Sheehan in the President’s stead, saying how he appreciates her sacrifice but, jeez, there’s all that brush he still needs to clear.  Not satisfied, Sheehan says she will remain until the President meets with her.  Privately, President Bush has told his supporters “See, we’ll remain here, so we don’t have to meet her there.”  I would be very shocked if this one woman could cause Bush to actually take responsibility for his dumbass war, to actually deal with it in human terms and not robotically through scripted “enemies of freedom” “noble cause” catchphrases (or the desperate attempts to link his Iraq landgrab with 9/11); but I am very proud of and impressed with her for trying.
The Lone Star Iconoclast Online has created a “Cindy Watch” detailing her day-to-day protest.  Another site, meetwithcindy.org, has also appeared.  Sheehan is also a founder of the Gold Star Families for Peace, which is also keeping track of her.  Unfortunately, interest is so great all those sites are running slow right now.
Rumor has it, Sheehan will be arrested on Thursday, since, as we all know, a 47 year-old-woman standing by the side of a country road is an obvious “threat to national security”.  This can’t help but be a grrreat PR move for the President and for his party.  I can see the headlines now: “Bush Causes Son’s Death, Throws Mom in Jail”.  Maybe he can top it off by running over her dog with his pickup truck.

One Wedding and a Cookout

As promised, here’s video of the wedding I went to (on August 6), followed by the family get-together the next day (August 7). This is a larger-sized version than available in my podcast subscription.

Psoriacast (2005-08-05)

I don’t know about you, but I think these close-up shots are creeping out my iSight camera and EvoCam software. They were highly uncooperative in capturing and uploading the following gruesome image, this time of my left hand…

Hack-a-Snack

The database updates were finished last night, which means all entries now have proper titles again. And for the last week I’ve been working on an audio/video podcast, which you can subscribe to in iTunes. For the most part, it’s the same video files already available here; but there are also three newly created audio podcasts [see below]. I know I said I wasn’t going to start a podcast, but I have to admit it’s fun having my own page in the iTunes Music Store [since removed].
    But I digress.
The big news is that with these instructions and keypad codes I am now king of the snack machine at work! 80¢ candy bars? Your days are numbered! 85¢ for a bag of chips? I don’t think so!

Airing Out the Err

It’s as if the approaching weekend has turned everyone stupid. For instance, I heard a radio show yesterday where some guy was defending how great growing up in the ’80s was because “we had Tang”…evidently oblivious over how Tang was first sold in 1959. Today’s Inside Mac Radio news podcast cites how top40-charts.com says Moby “is set to release” an iTunes Originals album…completely oblivious over how a quick glance at the iTunes Music Store would show the compilation is already for sale, and was in fact released last Tuesday. And, right before I started typing this, CNN had a story about fatal “lightening” strikes.
Yes I know these are fairly trivial. But, what can I say? Stupid stuff bugs me.
