Wasn’t this in some Bill Murray movie?
    Behold the Incredible Expanding Baby! According to this news report, Luka Meliksishvili, a 15-month-old child in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, “weighs 55 pounds and is gaining nearly 5 pounds a month”. At this rate, he is well on his way to being named World Biggest Baby by the Guinness Book of World Records — which I must say is a surprise to me, since I thought I worked with the world’s biggest baby. His mother, Eka, is worried about the weight gain, but doctors believe there is no cause for concern. Also troubling the mother is why every time they get a new puppy it seems to disappear a few days later.

No Escape!

    I have no idea why I kept putting it off. My renewal for this website is up soon, and for no known reason I kept ignoring the e-mails and procrasting on taking out my credit card and buying another year of service. I finally forced myself to do so last night, and in the process learned (or re-learned) my deadline would have been June 3.
    It seems like only roughly twelve months ago I was complaining about my webhosting and looking elsewhere.
    …Good times…
    The SFG domain is safe, mind you (having been registered elsewhere and paid off for two more years); but this page itself would’ve been unavailable. You thought you’d be free of it, didn’t you — but I caught you in the knick of time! Bu-wa-ha-ha-ha!

The Netscape site provides this list of ten “dirtiest” foods, which, coincidentally, pretty much covers something for everyone and something for every meal. It just goes to show, God did not intend us to eat or drink anything, ever.

But Can George Bush Pronounce It?

    According to Variety, the MPAA warns reshoots for the Warner Bros’ Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban may garner the film an R or even NC-17 rating.
    Family groups decry the film company’s decision, which makes the movie potentially inaccessible to its target youth audience. A WB spokesman said the additional scenes were shot to make the movie more “timely”.
    Azkaban, based on the third book in the popular series penned by JK Rowling, is still scheduled to open Friday, June 4.

Today in Fat (2004-05-27)

    Usually I try to go for a sarcastic or self-deprecating angle with these Food posts, but this story, from the BBC, is too sad and too disturbing for that. The Royal London Hospital revealed the case of a three-year-old girl who died from heart failure related to obesity. She weighed over eighty pounds. She was so heavy she could not breathe and literally was smothered by her own fat. “Some may say the parents are responsible,” says a pediatrician quoted in the article, “but if a child is demanding food it can be very difficult to refuse it.”
    UK officials and MPs are shocked and outraged. “The Commons Health Committee warned that obese children could become the first generation to die before their parents.
    “The[ir] report warns obesity has grown by almost 400% in 25 years, with three-quarters of adults now overweight or obese.
    “England has the fastest growing obesity problem in Europe, with childhood obesity tripling in 20 years. […] The committee’s report attacked the government, NHS, the food industry and advertisers for failing to do enough to address the growing problem of obesity.”
    That being said, how ’bout some funny pictures to brighten everyone’s spirits? Eh?…

Going Around in Circles

    I recently found out about a feature at Amazon called “Purchase Circles”. Amazon keeps track of purchases made from certain regions or from employees at various companies, and has compiled this information into what amounts to highly focused best seller lists. I’ve been having fun going through their list of companies, comparing employee purchases between Apple and Microsoft purchases, seeing what Ford employees have been ordering, or what AOL employees have gotten. Or finding out people in my area are interested in.
    Usually, the top sellers are The South Beach Diet, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and The DaVinci Code; but some of the lists are interesting. Here’s Amazon’s Purchase Circle front page, their list of companies, and their list of US regions.

Thinking Inside the Box

    A couple days ago I was whining about how difficult it is to find head cleaner tapes. Since no store around me stocks them, I was forced to order them online from J & R Music (through Amazon). My two cassettes arrived tonight … and is it just me or did J & R Music kind of overdo the packaging?
