The Meaning of Life Resolved

I heard rumors from The Digital Bits that those people who’d sent back their defective Meaning of Life DVD were being sent back equally defective replacements! Even though the replacements were available by mid-November I took no chances, waiting until January 5 to send disc one back to MCA/Universal. An agency called Lee Fulfillment sent my replacement Disc 1 back. I got it yesterday and, thankfully, it plays perfectly. There are no interlacing problems and the disc is at last watchable.
I happened upon more interlacing problems in another new title. This time on disc two of Cheers: The Second Season. Strangely, they only pop up in one episode, “They Called Me Mayday”, and only in its second half (after what would’ve been the commercial break). This Cheers box set had another even stranger problem: one shot of Sam in the second to last episode is extremely grainy and it even looks slightly sped up, causing some choppy and chipmunky audio! It’s a shame such a great show is exhibiting such wear and tear, especially since the first season box looked flawless.

Today in Food (2004/01/12)

Customers at an area Burger King drive-thru are being told “You don’t need a couple of Whoppers. You are too fat. Pull ahead.” This is not coming from the employees however, but according to WDIV, from some kids who’ve hacked into the drive-thru speaker’s radio frequency.
And in Diet Blog: Day Ten news: I actually had a dream last night I was eating fried chicken.

Blog Within a Blog: My New Computer 6.5

From the “I Guess I’ll Just Never Learn” Department: I just ordered a new SATA drive for my supercomputer. As you’ll recall, it was the SATA drives which failed last month, causing me to lose between 160 and 200 GBs of data on my RAID. (Unless I can scrounge $1,000 to $15,000 for a data recovery service.)
I can assure you I do not intend on creating another RAID (certainly not a striped RAID0). Simply put, my IDE connections are full and I want the new SATA drive so I can get back to using Windows XP. Windows 2000, which I’m using now, is just too dull and dry; plus the fact I’m less used to it than XP.
Here’s hoping the whole thing doesn’t just blow up the next time I work inside it.
P.S. In Diet Blog: Day Nine news: I weighed in at 230½ this morning. That’s another four pounds lost, bringing the total to eight pounds lost this week. Even more remarkably, I don’t feel as gnawingly hungry.
I still would kill for a slice of pizza though.

Today in Food (2004/01/08)

An old story, but one I only just saw. Charles R Grady, SFG’s “Fathead of the Week”, has sued Frito-Lay on the grounds that Doritos damage his throat.
Perhaps he should try chewing first.
The suit was originally filed back in 1995, but it made the news recently since the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a major setback when they declared Grady could not use purported scientific evidence to back his claim. (The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a nice take on this.)
And, in Diet Blog: Day Six news, I’ve lost a further pound and a half.

Today in Food (2004/01/07)

Two stories today, seeing as I was remiss on Sunday for not pointing out that Detroit is now listed as the fattest city in the country. I’ve made note of this list before, and in the last couple years Detroit has been listed as number three. At last we’ve made it to number one! Congratulations all around. I hope I’m not being immodest in suggesting this site might have played some part in this victory, though I have to warn that my diet might threaten the hope of a repeat. (By the way, Big Fat Blog has a nice archived article on why the criteria behind the yearly Men’s Fitness list is flawed.)
Also, according to the New York Times, McDonald’s “began displaying posters and brochures yesterday that show how the company’s products can fit into low-carbohydrate, low-fat and low-calorie meal plans.
“Consumers may delete buns, condiments and, in some cases, lettuce and tomatoes, but the cost of each menu item will not change, a McDonald’s spokeswoman said.”
No word on whether customers can exchange their burgers for food.

Diet Blog: Day Five

I said the other day how I hadn’t weighed myself. It seemed improper not to, though, on the outset of a diet, so I performed that formality on Sunday (on Day Two). I weighed in at a hefty 238½, which, considering my last official weigh-in, on January 1 2002, was 235 pounds, is not all that bad. Five and a half pounds gained in two years.
Anyway, after two days of strict adherence to the South Park diet, I weighed myself again yesterday morning…and I lost three pounds. I now weigh in at 235½. I know better than to weigh myself too frequently, but it’s nice to see such immediate results. It looks like it’s going to get tougher though. I thought the Holiday Eating Season was over, but it looks like temptation is still in my path: a company dinner is planned for this Sunday at Benihana’s, I just heard my friends want to have a night of wallyball and drinking on the 16th, Poker Night is being talked about on the 23rd, and Super Bowl Sunday follows soon after!

Warp & Weft

I see over at the Something Awful forums that the Army has a web-based survey on new styles for uniforms. The choices are suspiciously reminiscent of Star Trek‘s Starfleet!
See the choices for yourself, since I’ve mirrored them here.
I’m not sure what to make of this. Could it mean a new Prime Directive policy of non-interference? Doubtful, considering we need to invade another country by November. Or does this mean the military has been overrun by nerds? Who’s to say, since that might be covered by the Don’t Ask / Don’t Tell policy. Either way, I say “Set phasers on fashion!”

Frustrations

The first full day back at work, and by “full” I mean looooonng. It’s been okay so far, but it’s tough getting back to our old hours. And it doesn’t help that
Loreena McKennitt published her year-end message, and I found out her next album won’t be out till Fall of 2005!!!
    Or that…
Homestar Runner hasn’t been updated for half a fricking month!!!
    Or that…
    I’m very very hungry.

Snowfall

They’ve been predicting a hellacious snowfall for this weekend. The snow arrived this afternoon. It fell pretty hard at first, but has tapered off. It’s supposed to snow all night and leave six to eight inches, which is a change from the original forecast of two to four feet. [Now I see this has been further revised to one to two inches of accumulation.]
I tried to capture the snowfall by using a stop-motion feature of my iSight. It got dark too quickly to get much, but nevertheless this is, at the least, a look at my street at dusk. (QuickTime, 15 seconds, 490 KBs.)

Diet Blog: Day One

Well, my diet plan began today.
I will be following the popular South Beach diet for the next two weeks. They say I can lose fifteen pounds just in that short time. I won’t know for sure, of course, since I did not weigh myself at the outset. That’s because I’ve frankly been afraid to weigh myself for over two years. [Cf. my un-updated weight page.]
I was hurting earlier this afternoon, between meals, when I recorded this video entry. My dinner, since then, was quite filling; but I’m posting this anyway, since it gave me a chance to try out my newly purchased iSight webcam…
