Howdy folks,

I thought that before I leave on my weekend excursion I would fill you in more thoroughly on last weekend. By the way, this weekend I leave on a class salida to Chota and el páramo del angel. Anyway, after writing to you folks last time, I realized that I forgot to mention the ecuadorians that we met while in Atacamés.

Our first meeting was on the bus with a man whose name I have long forgotten — surprising to anyone? Well, it turns out that he lived in Atacamés and owned a couple hotels there. He gave us the low down on the surrounding areas and told us what’s what about tourism on the coast. Also, when we left the bus, he led us to the beach. The bus just drops you off in the middle of town and you basically have to smell your way to the salt water.

Our next encounter was later that night, at one of the many beachside bars. We were sitting on our swings (yes, instead of stools there were swings) when this guy comes up to my companion Sarah and starts going on about how he speaks german, or something like that. He was obviously far beyond drunk. Anyway, Sarah, being the kind-hearted soul she is, looks at me and says, switch seats with me. So, being the strong masculine beast that I am, I oblige and put myself between her and the unwelcome intruder. Well, he proceeds to talk to me, and then comes over and puts his arm around my shoulder. By this time the people working at the bar have come over and said, ¿te está molestando?, to which I of course answer, ¡sí! Luckily, this bar happens to be the only one on the beach with ‘security’. His name was Maurice, a kind young ecuadorian man. After about 10 minutes more annoyance, Maurice escorted the drunkard away, and while they were gone, my friends and I took our leave.

The next day, while sampling some wonderful banana splits, Maurice happened by, and stopped for a chat. He was very cool and told us a little about himself and about his city. Later that night we had our final encounter with a suspicious character. Allow me to set the scene. The three gringos are sitting on the beach at night, sipping drinks and playing cards. We are about 15 feet away from the bar and about 20 feet from the ocean. Out of the corner of my eye, a man starts limping up to us, yes, he had a limp. He introduces himself as Carlos, and seems nice enough, though I am ALWAYS suspicious. Well, he begins to tell us about the dangers of sitting on the beach at night. This leads me to believe that he is one of the dangers. However, he did have a limp, and even though i’m scrawny, come on!! As it turns out, I think he was just trying to mooch some liqour. We were having none of it, though we did invite him to join our card game. After teaching him the rules of Go Fish, we played out 3 whole games. It was interesting to say the least. After our final game we retired to the hotel, promising Carlos to return to the bars to do some dancing, which we never did.

Anyway, I’ve bored you long enough with my story telling. Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you all on the flip side.

Chicks Chuck Chaps

I don’t know what took them so long. After the simple-minded kneejerk cries of treason and the ridiculous record burning shindigs, I was disappointed a while ago when the Dixie Chicks went to the media to apologize for their statement expressing “shame” at George W Bush’s unstoppable lust for war. I was hoping they would denounce all those turncoat fans. Good riddance, they should’ve said. We prefer an audience that has a clue. Just because you live near cattle doesn’t mean you have to act like them. Unfortunately their publicity machine forced them into a tentative mea culpa, even though their attack on Bush was simply stating the obvious.
It took a while, but realization has finally hit them. Fiddlist Martie Maguire today, in Germany’s Der Spiegel [link to Austin Business Journal article, link to Men’s News Daily article], has finally admitted the band has received a warmer welcome from the rock/pop crowd than their homegrown country throng, and as a result they are seriously considering leaving country music. I really doubt this will change the Chicks’ sound too much — their version of folk and bluegrass doesn’t conform to country radio anyway. And I doubt it will change their name. But as a humble representative of the pop/rock audience I welcome them to the fold, and I look forward to what they have planned. Country music doesn’t deserve you anyway.

Live News

That figures. Right after I pre-order the upcoming live CDs, their release date gets changed. Buffettnews reports the CDs, originally scheduled to start appearing in October, won’t show up till the beginning of November. This information was available on the Mailboat Records official site, but I kept hoping Amazon’s release dates might hold somehow. But, now that Amazon has changed the dates on their site, it’s irrevocable.
Maybe my niece can get me copies off I-Tunes while I wait.

The QuickTime File of Galadriel

We were just discussing how there’s been no word on whether the upcoming Return of the King trailer would be available for download, but according to The One Ring.net it will be! The trailer will premiere this Friday, accompanying New Line’s Secondhand Lions. It will show up the following day on Kazaa and Morpheus but will in fact be a mislabeled, three-minute MPEG of two people fornicating. And then, on Monday, the trailer will be officially available for download from The Lord of the Rings movie site.
Yes, at last, the momentum begins.

Emmy 2003

I am embarrassed to admit it but I didn’t find out the Emmys were on Sunday until the afternoon of the day before! At least I didn’t miss the program, but it came up so fast I wasn’t able to build up to it.
Despite being such an avid TV watcher, I really don’t seek out too many new shows and I actively avoid those damnable reality shows (which really need a name change to something more appropriate, like “on-location game shows””), so I was unfamiliar with many of the nominees. So, looking back, having the same people win again last night doesn’t bother me too much.
One thing I am sick of is this crap about how The West Wing had a “lackluster” year because ratings were down. Ratings were down because ABC counterprogrammed The Bachelor. That doesn’t mean The West Wing suddenly became less of a show; it simply means stupid viewers flock to stupid shows. Good riddance to them. Heaven knows how those viewers stuck with TWW as long as they did without a bikini or a hot tub in sight. And this season was far from lackluster. I might concede season three was a bit unfocused, but I thought the last season (with its subplot about a Qumari assassination) was back to form.
I admit I\’m surprised The Sopranos didn’t finally get Emmy recognition; but I’m glad The West Wing won because I still believe it was, is, and hopefully will be the superior show. I’ve heard that James Gandolfini was upset backstage (I haven’t seen the E! tape yet) that his show didn’t win the big award, but I would suggest they got what they deserved. For me The Sopranos is best when it focuses on Tony and Carmela (and certainly not their kids), so it’s fitting that both James Gandolfini and Edie Falco got best actor awards. I’d also suggest that The West Wing‘s direction award and The Sopranos‘ writing award be flipped, which would be even more suitable. (And did Joe Pantaliano get the Emmy for his acting or because of the way his character was bumped off?)
The biggest thrills for me, apart from all the cleavage of course, were the two wins for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. If any show had to break Letterman’s five year streak, I’m glad it was this one.
Highlights: James Gandolfini blowing a razzberry into the microphone for his son. Lowlights: Wanda Sykes trying to get the crowd to dance.
Lowlights runner-up: more replays of Madonna and Britney kissing. Oo, women kissing — big deal! If you watch enough E! or even Insomniac you’d know two women kissing means only one thing: there was a videocamera nearby.

Hello friends and family alike,

I am just returned from my trip not more than 20 minutes ago. I wish I could perfectly describe the weekend I had. First of all, the bus ride was ROUGH, 8 hours there and 7 back. On the way there, I sweat about a gallon of salty water, and on the way back someone decided to vomit, which was just a wonderful smell, as I’m sure you can imagine.

Anyway, about Atacames. Basically, it is a tourist beach, but almost all local tourists. The sand and ocean was beautiful (my first time at the pacific). We had a grand old time jumping into the waves and then baking in the sun. I also experienced a perfect zen moment. I was laying in my hammock, swinging back and forth when UB-40’s Red Red Wine came on at some reggea bar right near the beach. For 3 minutes I was transported to heaven.

Now, the city itself was like much of ecuador, dirty and mostly very poor. Another common thing to ecuador is people walking up to you and trying to sell you lots of things. Luckily we learned how to avoid the vendors and flies and really have a good time. We, (Yvonne, Sarah, and myself in case I never mentioned that) stayed in this cabana type thing (I got the big bed!) that cost 6 dollars a person. It wasn’t wonderful, but it was cheap. Sadly, it was also some sort of pressure cooker, and I basically just dripped sweat the entire night.

All in all, it was a good time, and I was sad to return to the city of quito. Well, I hope all is well, I will be sure to talk to you folks later.

RIAA Be Damned

Take my advice: get a newsgroup reader right now, subscribe to alt.binaries.music.shn, and start downloading*. Someone is sharing a soundboard recording of the Universal Amphitheater show from June 3 1978! It’s from the same tour whence came You Had to Be There. It’s so great to hear vintage Buffett again, and even better when it’s in lossless CD-quality! Twenty years have instantly dropped away from me and life is good.
*And go here if you don’t know how to turn SHNs back into WAVs.

Re-Author! Re-Author!

I’ve been recently been toying with the idea of trying out DVD X Copy for my DVD burner, with the purpose of archiving or backing up discs. The only problem is there are so many flavors of DVD X Copy (Gold, Platinum, Express, Plus) that I’m not sure which is best or has the features I would like. In some instances I can see wanting to compress the disc entire, in some cases to backup the movie alone, and in some cases to compress the feature and maybe one or two extras. Maybe one DVD X Copy can do all these, but I can’t tell for sure.
Luckily I discovered by accident a program called DVD Shrink. It allows for more flexibility in what disc elements to backup, and how much compression to apply to each element so as to budget how best to fit onto a DVDR. It’s still not perfect, but that’s outweighed by the simple fact the program is absolutely free! Check it out: Link to website.  |  Link to download.

Warning of Life Part III: The Warning of Life

The Digital Bits still doesn’t have a review (I betcha because MCA/Universal is shying away from sending out review copies), but they at least state a confirmation of The Meaning of Life problem:

And for you Python fans with progressive scan DVD players and TVs, we have a purchase warning. Universal’s new DVD of Monty Python’s Meaning of Life: Special Edition is defective — yet ANOTHER defect in a Universal title. Only Disc One (the movie disc) is affected, but it’s definitely a defect in the authoring of the disc. It appears that the software “flags” on the disc that allow progressive scan DVD players to de-interlace the video signal have been screwed up. As a result, the 3-2 pulldown is incorrectly done on almost all progressive DVD players, resulting in constant jagged edges throughout the film. We have confirmed this on our own equipment. This is a defect of ALL copies of the disc, but you’ll only notice the problem on progressive players. So you folks with the best technology are screwed. Universal seriously needs to get its act together with regard to it’s [sic] Quality Control department. Judging by the many e-mails we’re getting, Bits readers are getting awfully tired of having to send in discs for replacement. In any case, call Universal’s Meaning of Life customer “service” hotline at 1-800-433-4673 to arrange to have your copies replaced… by sometime in mid to late November (with any luck).

So that’s nice: all progressive-scan players are affected, as I guessed; yet MCA/Universal’s press release refers to these state-of-the-art players a “small number of DVD players [which] do not have the technical capability to take full advantage of the Monty Python̵ disc. That, my friends, is a spin worthy of Rumsfeld.
