    Too bad I look more like a cross between John Belushi and Jon Lovitz or I might have had a chance to audition for a new movie based on Monty Python‘s Graham Chapman. The movie will be called Gin and Tonic, and auditions are being held March 20 2004.
    Do you think the fact I have every Monty Python sketch committed to memory might sway them?

One-Minute Boycott

    Even though the airwaves are public, even though the contest was voted on by the public, CBS is still refusing to air the winning commercial in MoveOn.org‘s “Bush in 30 Seconds” contest. The commercial, scheduled to bookend the Super Bowl halftime show, will instead air on CNN — since God forbid CBS disappont legions of rabid football fans by interrupting the screen time of Beyoncé or Nelly.
    MoveOn.org is trying to organize a one-minute boycott of the Super Bowl, encouraging interested parties to switch over to CNN at 8:10 PM and 8:35 PM EST. To help them in this regard, I’m offering a (low-bandwidth) copy of the winning commercial here, just in case you might be online during the game.
    You might also be interested to see the commercials which won in other contest categories. Or perhaps all the finalists in the contest. There’s some good stuff there. Have fun during the game. And watch out with those pretzels.

Pixar Packs Up

    The word is out. Pixar has ended negotiations with Disney and is now off to find Nemo a new home. Contract talks broke down because reportedly Pixar wanted to retain all rights to the movies it creates and which Disney distributes. This would greatly hamper Disney’s chances of exploiting Pixar’s characters in future sequels — since Lord knows Disney hasn’t recently created anything worth repeating.
    Disney’s recent decision to eviscerate its hand-drawn animation department also complicates things. This definitely turns up the heat on CEO Michael Eisner, claims Roy Disney, who also recently separated from the company which bears his family name. His Save Disney site enumerates several complaints over how Eisner has fumbled in running the company, turning what was a trusted quality name in family entertainment into some kind of mickey-mouse organization. Pixar however is sitting in the catbird’s seat. It’s obvious Disney needs them a lot more than they needed Disney, and already suitors are lining up to woo them into distribution deals.
    What does this mean to the Disney name? All I know is given the choice between paying money to see Fantastic Treasure Planet or Monsters Inc I’d pick the latter without hesitation.
    P.S. Pixar’s current contract still calls for two more movies. The Incredibles and Cars are already in production, and so will be issued under the Disney banner.

    The Internet is a wondrous thing, especially on slow-moving Thursday afternoons. Within its bounteous riches I was able to dive for such pearls as Office Clips.com, where I was able to repeatedly watch a fat lady fall down a trap door.
    Or, this article from the Atlantic Monthly, which describes how the government drafted thousands of pages brainstorming the peaceful transition to a post-war Iraq, only to have it all thrown out the window because “postwar planning was an impediment to war&#8221. Furthermore, since “detailed thought about the postwar situation meant facing costs and potential problems, and thus weakened the case for launching a ‘war of choice’ (the Washington term for a war not waged in immediate self-defense), it could be seen as an ‘antiwar’ undertaking.” But ultimately, “U.S. government predictions about postwar Iraq’s problems have proved as accurate as the assessments of pre-war Iraq’s strategic threat have proved flawed.”M

Diet Blog: Day Twenty-Six

    It’s getting tougher to stay on this So. Central Rain diet. I’ve even started cheating. That is to say, I’m sneaking an extra cheese stick on occasion, or maybe having a larger portion than I should. I have not “fallen off the wagon” and pigged out at some all-you-can-eat food bar…yet. I really thought Phase Two would be even easier, since the menu is not as rigid as Phase One; but I seem to be craving my old favorite foods even more. I’m so sick of tomatoes and zucchini and lettuce that I’m dying for a bag of chips just to break up the monotony! And with Super Bowl Sunday coming, I have a strong feeling that I will be giving in to temptation and reveling in self-indulgence. But then I’m already planning on going back to Phase One, so I can lose it all off again, and hopefully much more.
    As far as I my stats go, I’m doing better than last week. I weighed myself again this morning and am just under 224 pounds, which means I’ve lost over 2½ pounds since last Thursday and over 14½ pounds overall. And that calls for a happy dance…
